Academic skills development classes are
divided between academic skills and IT skills

You will have one hour of academic skills and one hour of IT skills per week.
Academic Skills
• This module aims to review and enhance participants' existing
academic skills in contexts relevant to the modules it complements.
• It will also introduce skills and frameworks specific to your level of
study, with weekly opportunities for participants to transfer these
elements to their own assignments.
By the end of the course, students will be able
to:
1. Write clear and concise essays and reflective statements.
2. Critically evaluate and integrate source material in
accordance with academic conventions.
3. Prepare and deliver effective presentations.
4. Develop their communicative competence through directed
study and self-reflection.
IT Skills
• The Computer Skills Development module covers a range of topics
and a variety of teaching and learning methods aimed at familiarizing
Level 4/5 learners with basic computer skills to enhance their
academic journey.
• The module will also introduce basic computer skills specific to
undergraduate study, with weekly opportunities for participants to
transfer these elements to their assignments.
By the end of the course,
students will be able to:
1. Proficiently use the various online learning
platforms offered by GBS such as Moodle and
EBSCO.
2. Learn fundamentals of operating a computer
system to store, retrieve and present data.
3. Improve their academic output using Microsoft
Office productivity suite with a specific focus on
MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Excel.
Attendance
These sessions will not count towards your overall
attendance record at GBS, however, in order to successfully
complete your assignments you need to attend ALL the
sessions.

We will be covering the skills you need to complete your

business assignments.

Records have shown that those students who do not attend

these classes either fail their assignments completely, or pass
with very low grades.

Academic Writing – an introduction

Consider all the purposes of writing in an academic context.

How many different genres (types) can you think of?

How do they differ?

Answers
Read the two texts (1.1. & 1.2) on the same subject.
a Which text would be more appropriate for an academic assignment? Why?
b What are the main differences between them? (Identify at least 3 specific
examples)

1.1 How to make people work harder is a topic that lots of people have written about in the last
few years. There are lots of different theories etc. and I think some of them are ok. When you
think about this we should remember the old Chinese proverb, that you can lead a horse to water
but you can’t make it drink. So how do we increase production? Well, if a company doesn’t
motivate staff it will not survive.  It’s quite a complex subject but I’ll just talk about a couple of
ideas.

1.2 Motivation has been the subject of numerous studies during recent decades, but this essay
will focus on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory (1943) and Herzberg’s two-
factor theory(1966). Their contemporary relevance to the need to motivate employees effectively
will be examined critically, given that this can be considered crucial to a firm’s survival in the
current climate.

1 Do not use idiomatic or colloquial vocabulary
(i.e., informal or conversational language)
e.g., kids, boss. Instead use standard
English e.g. Children/ managing director
2 Use vocabulary accurately there is a difference between currency
and money, or governance and
government, which you are expected to
know
3 Be as precise as possible when dealing with facts or figures
Avoid phrases such as: about a hundred or
hundreds of years ago. If it is necessary to
estimate numbers use approximately rather
than about
4 Conclusions should use tentative/ cautious language
Avoid absolute statements such as
‘employment causes crime’. Instead use
cautious phrases: ‘unemployment may
cause crime or tends to cause crime’

5 Avoid adverbs that show your personal opinion

luckily, remarkably, surprisingly

6 Do not contract verb forms

eg., don’t , can’t. Use the full form: do not / cannot
7 Although academic English tends to use the passive more than
standard English, it should not be over-used. both have their place

It is widely claimed that most companies perform worse
when……….. (Manners, 1995)

(in the 1st case, the focus is on the source, in the 2nd on
what companies do)
8 Avoid the following:

 like for introducing examples – use such as or for

instance
 thing and combinations nothing or something – use
factor, issue or topic
 lots of – use a significant/considerable number of
 little/big –use small/large
 ‘get’ phrases such as get better/worse – use improve and
deteriorate
 good/bad are simplistic- use positive/negative, e.g. ‘the
changes had several positive aspects’
