Using Kinds of Nouns

Noun
- A word that refers to a person, place, thing, or
idea is a noun.
There are different ways to classify this part of speech,
among which are as follows:
boss   bosses
        

A noun referring to one is singular while a noun referring to more


than one is plural. Most nouns form their plural by adding -s or -es.
These nouns are called regular nouns.

Examples: Lane – Lanes


Box- Boxes
Boss – Bosses
Tax- Taxes
Bush - Bushes
Noun ending Forming the plural Example
s, x, ch or sh Add -es boss  bosses

consonant + y Change y to i then baby babies


add -es candy candies
curry  curries

most others Add -s cat  cats


face  faces
day  days
Not all plural nouns can be formed by simply adding -s or -es.
Such nouns are called irregular nouns.

Examples: Life– Lives


Sky– Skies
Child – Children
Knife- Knives

Common Noun
- Is a general type of noun. It does not specify. A person, place,
thing, or idea. It is not capitalized.
proper noun
Is specific and is always capitalized.
concrete noun
A concrete noun can be seen, touched,
felt, smelled, tasted, or heard.
Ex: House flower, music, bear, pie,
tornado, ranch, colony, milk, Niagara
Falls, team, lotion, stars, water,
student, fire fighter, pencil, computer,
incense, table, tree, fox, bang, cloud,
panther, sunset, cinnamon, rain,
cookies, car, etc. 
Abstract Noun
A noun that we cannot experience with our
senses is called an abstract noun.

Ex: Uniqueness Love, fear, anger,


joy, excitement, Courage, bravery,
cowardice, etc.
Collective
Nouns that refer to a group of people, animals,
things, or concepts or ideas as a single entity are
called collective nouns.
Examples: team, council, troupe
Nouns ca also be classified according to gender. There are four noun genders.

Masculine
This gender refers to male nouns.
Examples: man, king
Feminine
This gender refers to female nouns.
Examples: woman, queen
Common
A noun is in the common gender if it can be either male or
female.
Examples: person, child, animal
Neuter
A noun is in the neuter gender if it is neither male nor female.
Lifeless objects and collective nouns are classified as neuter
nouns.
Examples: tricks, teams
