Common Sense
Common sense is the human superpower of judging daily matters. Whether
you feel the decision you’re making is bad or good, it is a common sense matter and
it all depends on the level of understanding and rationalization.
Although Stoic philosophy considers it to be inherited, modern philosophies
give more credit to learning it instead. According to Alfred Schutz, developing
common sense starts from birth, thus its main influences are the environment and the
culture in which someone is born.

Who coined the term?
 Several writers and philosophers wrote about common sense, making it difficult to find
its origin. It is one of the terms which still couldn’t be dated, nor attached to a name up to
this day. According to some theories, the term could have been first used and described
by Aristotle, one of the works mentioning it being De Anima, though it is not certain.
 Since the installment of the A.D. system, Juvenal is between the first known writers to
have written about common sense in one of his books of satirical poems. He states
“Common sense is rare”, a quote which has been repeated and paraphrased many times
since then. Thomas Paine, having published a pamphlet entitled Common Sense, has
been often attributed with the term instead.
“There is not a more uncommon thing in the world
than common sense.

Literariness
 In 1920, Roman Jakobson introduced the term “literariness,” defining it as the use
of certain language which makes the difference between literary and non-literary
works.
 Situated texts have proved to be a way to look at the world from a detached point of
view. Along the time, they were changed and caught different meanings, to the
point where the process of writing, more than the finale product, became the main
point of interest. The movement was named “literary turn.”
Key researchers
 Having a similar idea as Jakobson, the critic Terry Eagleton came up with an
ideology, which basically means “Anything can be literature” or “can cease to be
literature” based on the type of language used, in his book entitled Literary Theory:
An Introduction.
 Most postmodern literary theorists don’t agree with their definition, viewing
literariness as a more abstract term. Jonathan Culler and Stanley Fish considered
the difference is determined by the reader’s interpretation and expectations of the
text.
Tourism
 Tourism refers to traveling for fun, for the pleasure of visiting places. The term is
derived from the word tour, which comes from Ancient Greek’s tornus and means
lathe (a machine which shapes wood or metal while rotating it).
 While it is believed to be a more actual action, tourism can be dated back to
Antiquity due to the existing records of visitors and scribes traveling to Egypt to
see the pyramids and other religious monuments.
Who was the first
known tourist?
Cyriacus of Ancona was an Italian
humanist and also the first known cultural
tourist since Antiquity. In the 15th century,
he left his home from Ancona, Italy, in
order to find remains of ancient
civilizations.
His records, including ancient inscriptions,
descriptions of archaeology sites and
sketches of ruins, are among the only ones
kept to this day.
Importance of tourism
For the tourist:
 it can broaden their horizon and way of thinking from seeing how different
cultures act;
 boosts productivity and happiness overall;
 learning is easier through traveling since they enjoy themselves, thus it has an
educational impact.
Importance of tourism
for locals
For the residents of an attraction site, tourism is
in first place important because it is a source of
income. Whether it is from offering
transportation services or selling souvenirs,
many cities depend solely on tourism.
Not only for humans, but also for animals it
was proved important. Lopburi is a well known
city in Thailand because of the monkeys living
near their temple. Due to the virus, tourist
stopped visiting the area, forcing the monkeys
to venture in the city in search of food.
