THE FIBONACCI SEQUENCE

Leonardo of Pisa, also known as

Fibonacci (1170 – 1250), is one
of the best-known
mathematicians of medieval
Europe. In 1202, after a trip
that took him to several Arab
and Eastern countries,
Fibonacci wrote the book Liber
Abaci
The mathematical notation Fn use to represent the
following recursive definition gives the nth Fibonacci
sequence.

F1 = 1, F2 = 1, and Fn = Fn – 1 + Fn – 2 for n ≥ 3

Or

an = an – 1 , + an – 2 for n > 2 where a1 = 1,a2 = 1

EXAMPLE: Find the 7th and 8th
Fibonacci numbers.

SOLUTION: The 1st six (6) Fibonacci Numbers (FN)

are 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8. The 7th is the sum of
the 2 previous numbers.
Thus: F7 = F6 + F5 F8 = F7 + F6
= 8 + 5 = 13 + 8
F7 = 13 F8 = 21
Importance of Mathematics in Our World

1 . Mathematics for Organization

- Helps organize patterns and regularities in

the world. To make sense of all available
information, we need mathematical tools
to help us make sound analysis and better
decisions.
2. Mathematics for Prediction

- It helps predict the behavior of nature and

phenomena in the world. It is sometimes
said that history repeats itself. As much as
we can use mathematical models using
existing data to generate analysis and
interpretations, we can also use them to
make predictions.
3. Mathematics for Control

- It helps humans exert control over

occurrences in the world for the
advancement of our civilization.
There seems to an underlying
mathematical structure in the way
that natural objects and phenomena
behave.
4. Mathematics Is Indispensable

Mathematics plays a huge

role in the underpinnings of
our world. We have seen it in
living creatures and natural
phenomena.
