WHAT IS A FILE?

• File is a sequence of logical


records.
• Every file should be stored
under a unique name for its
future reference.
• Every file should be saved
along with an extension.
• They are represented with
icons to recognize them easily
on computers.
WHAT IS A
DIRECTORY?
• Directory is a place/ area/
location where a set of file(s)
will be stored.
• It is a folder which contains
details about files, file size
and time when they are
created and last modified.
• Hierarchical structure of
directories.

CREATE RENAME

• Named assigned plus filename extension

PARTS;

FILE DIRECTORIES AND FOLDERS

• Every storage device has a directory containing a list of its files


• Root directory (like “C:\”)
• Subdirectory
• Depicted as folders
• A computer’s file location is defined
by a path
• Examples: D:\ is the root of the D drive
• Examples: C:\Notes\CS 101\Week 1\notes.txt
• Examples: F:\1999\Music\CDs\Prince

CREATING A FILE

Open the software application associated with the


file type you wish to create. You can open the
application by double-clicking on it.

Click on "File" along the top of your screen and


select "New." The specific command may be
slightly different from application to application.

Click "File" again at the top of your screen.

Type the name you want to give the file in the "Save
As:" field. Be sure to leave all information after the
period in the name intact. This is the file extension
and tells your computer what application is
associated with the file.

Click the "Save" button. You have successfully


created a file.

From the desktop, right


click

Select New

Select Folder

Name your Folder

To create a folder, right-


click, then select New
then Folder.

In Windows 7, there is a
New folder button near
the top of the window.

In Windows 10, you can


also click the Home tab,
then the New Folder
button.

To rename a file or
folder, right-click
the file or folder,
then select Rename.
