FILE HANDLING

Lesson 3
OPERATING SYSTEM

• The Operating System is a software


• It manages the hardware and other
software in a computer system.
• It provides services to other software.
• It creates a relationship between the user
and the hardware.
• Eg – Windows, Linux, Ubuntu, Redhat
O/S, Mac OS
• There are two main services performed by an operating system.
They are:
1. Managing the hardware and software of a computer
2. Providing user interface

• File Management is one of the processes of managing the


hardware of a computer
USER INTERFACE

• The operating system gives a user interface to a user to do his


tasks.
• This interface is displayed on the screen when the computer is
turned on.
• When you open an icon of a file or a program, it is displayed
on the user interface
• You can use the icons to open a file or a program
TYPES OF USER INTERFACE

1. Graphic User Interface (GUI)


eg – windows, mac OS , linux

2. Command Line Interface (CLI)


eg – MS DOS
FILE MANAGEMENT

• A file can contain any data, instructions and commands


• We can save data in files and we keep the files within the folders
in order to manage them methodically.
• It also includes,
• Opening a file
• Editing a file
• Closing a file
• Maximizing/ minimizing and resizing a window
• The Operating System manages the files and folders.
• A file is a collection of data , information and commands.
• A folder is a collection of files.
• Eg – listening
• Some of the services performed by the Operating System
in file management are listed below:
 Making new files and saving them at suitable places
 Deleting the unnecessary files
 Arranging the folders in order
 Renaming the files and folders
 Changing the storage location of files and folders
 Creating backups of the files and folders as needed
• File and folder management includes
 handling file properties,
 file operations,
 file access and
 file systems.
• The data we save must be given a file name for the purpose of identification.
File names consist of two components, namely file name and file extension.

The operating system does not allow to save two files


with the same file name which is created by the same
application software in the same folder.
GRAPHIC SOFTWARE

• A graphic software is used to draw images, charts, shapes, diagrams,


figures and building plans

• Eg – photoshop, illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects,


Lightroom, Dreamweaver
WHAT IS A FOLDER?

• A folder is used to keep files in order.


• Eg – In Prize Giving 2020 Folder, it includes ,
File of the prize giving agenda
File of the list of guests
File of the Prize Winners
File of the photos
• Symbols like ….., ; , <> can be used to name a file or folder
• A folder contains files like documents, images, and videos etc.
WINDOW

• Title bar – shows the name of the file.


• Menu bar – contains commands to carry out a task in a folder, a
document or program
• Tool Bar – Contains several commands that are taken by the menu bar.
• Multiple working windows can be opened at the same time.
• The active window is shown first and its title bar is highlighted
• The opened windows are displayed as buttons or icons on the task bar.
CREATE A FILE

• When you give the “save” command to


an open window of an application, it
creates a file to save the document.
SAVE A FILE

Saving for the first time


• File Save As Select location File Name Save

Saving the modified file after using again


• File Save
• Ctrl + S
OPEN A FILE

A new file
• Open the application File New

A saved file
• Find the file location Click on it
EDIT A FILE

• You can only edit a saved file after


opening it.
