“Assessment of the Perception andPractices of the Community

Pharmaciston Pharmaceutical Care in Dumaguete City”

research
Pharmaceutical care is the direct, responsible
provision of medication-related care for the purpose
of achieving definite outcomes that improve a
patient’s quality of life by Hepler (1990). This
definition was also adapted by the American Society
of Health-System Pharmacists ASHP (2003) in which
they considered it as an irreducible unit of care
wherein one pharmacist will provide direct care to
one patient in order to achieve safe and effective
medication. It was also emphasized by the ASHP
(2003) that pharmaceutical care is pertinent and
achievable by drug specialists in all practice settings.

There are studies that provide evidences that
pharmaceutical care cannot be fully achieved due
to a lot of factors. In the study of Aburuz et al
(2012) it was reported that the community
pharmacist in Jordan expressed a willingness to
perform pharmaceutical care practice but have
identified a number of barriers to successfully
implement it. The pharmaceutical training was
found to be the top barrier to the provision of
pharmaceutical care. It was also proven in the
study of Ibrahim et al (2015) that although being
well established within the community,
pharmacists in Dubai negatively perceived their
own professional role. They mentioned that there

In the study conducted by Agaceta, et al
(2013) it was found out that hospital pharmacists
in Metro manila have not understood the essential
role of pharmaceutical care. Specifically, the
results showed that generally there is a low
perceived level of understanding the concept of
pharmaceutical care among the respondents. Only
50.25% have correct perceived levels of
understanding the pharmaceutical care concept
(total mean score of 60 or higher). The
respondents have high perceived levels of
importance but deem themselves to have low INTRODUCTION
