Lesson 1 –
 To classify hotels, hotel ratings are used according
HOTEL & to certain objective standards such as the available
RESTAURANT facilities or the level of services provided.
RATING SYSTEMS
AND  Many rating schemes and organizations globally
CLASSIFICATIONS and most of these organizations use the STAR
SYMBOL to categorize hotels.

 The greater the number of stars (or other symbols),


the higher the expected levels of luxury

Hotel Small-scale hotel, usually located in a rural or semi-rural area, and
w/Charm offering an intimate and authentic atmosphere
Eco-Lodge Hotel located in a natural and wild environment, providing select or
Hotel limited service and catering for adventure or for activities related to
the discovery of nature
Apart –Hotel Residential hotel where accommodation is provided in studios and
apartment and particularly suited for travellers who are making an
extended stay, who require housing that includes kitchen facilities
and who may be satisfied with limited services
Stopover Easily accessible hotel mainly designed for stopovers and short
Hotel stays within a functional ingrastructure and suited for travellers who
may be satisfied with limited service

Grading System – • Five (5) levels of accommodation standards ranging from
Philippines one to five stars applicable to hotels, resorts and apartment
hotels.
• To obtain higher stars, progressively higher service and
facility quality, facility condition and improved business
practices like environmental management, which are
determined by a points system should be provided across all
areas.
• A total of 1000 points have been set as the maximum
number of points that can be achieved by Hotels, Resorts, and
Apartment Hotels.

1. Assists government planning by supplying authoritative and reliable


statistical data for different types of accommodation;
2. Identify the need for developing certain categories of establishments;
3. Improves marketing strategies by enabling tourist board promotion of
