TACTICAL RADIO COMMUNICATION

Limitation of Radio Communication

 Subject to equipment breakdown

 Subject to atmospheric condition
 Subject to interference
 Least secure

TACTICAL RADIO COMMUNICATION

Principal Characteristics
Frequency Range

This general characteristics refers to

the frequency band that the
particular equipment can operate
in. As an example, the radio set
URC-187 operates on the frequency
2 – 12 MHz while the radio set
PRC-77 operates within the range
of 30 to 75.95Mhz band.
TACTICAL RADIO COMMUNICATION

Principal Characteristics
Operating Range

This general characteristics refers to the

distance a radio set can be located from
another set and still be able to
communicate.

TACTICAL RADIO COMMUNICATION

Netting Requirements for Two or More Radio Sets

 Must have same frequency

 Same type of modulation
 Same emission
 Within the range of smaller set
TACTICAL RADIO COMMUNICATION

Factor Affecting Reliability of Radio Communication

 Antenna Setting
 Choice of antenna
 Poor choices of frequencies
 Power
TACTICAL RADIO COMMUNICATION

HF General Characteristics
 Sky wave and Ground Wave communications
are possible.
- Longer ranges are possible than VHF.
- Screening from enemy EW is difficult.

 Ground transmission tend to follow the curvature

of the earth.
- High ground site is not imperative.
TACTICAL RADIO COMMUNICATION

HF General Characteristics
 Sky wave transmission vary continuously.
- Require skill to establish.
- Require constant engineering.

 Longer wavelength than VHF.

- High ground site is not imperative.
- Difficult to make broadband antenna.
TACTICAL RADIO COMMUNICATION

HF General Characteristics
 Single Sideband (SSB) or Amplitude Modulation
(AM) is used.
- Signal is more susceptible to noise.
- Possible to work through jamming and
noise.

 Narrower bandwidth is available.

- Data rates are lower.
- More difficult to secure.
TACTICAL RADIO COMMUNICATION

HF General Characteristics

 Tactical interception is very difficult while

Direction Finding (DF) is not as accurate as far
VHF.
TACTICAL RADIO COMMUNICATION

VHF General Characteristics (30-300MHz)

 Basically radio Line of Sight (LOS).
- Probably have to sight on high ground.

 Smaller wavelength than HF.

- Antenna is smaller.
- Antenna is more efficient.
- It is easier to make the antenna broadband.
TACTICAL RADIO COMMUNICATION

VHF General Characteristics (30-300MHz)

 Frequency Modulation (FM) is used.
- More immune to noise than HF.
- Subject to capture effect.

 Wider bandwidth are available.

- Greater data rates possible than with HF.
- Easier to secure.
TACTICAL RADIO COMMUNICATION

VHF General Characteristics (30-300MHz)

 Interception and direction Finding (DF) of VHF

signals is easy if hostile EW is within the range.

 Terrain shielding of antennas is easier than for

HF.
