Questions and Answers:

How does the greeting set a positive tone and provide a sense of recognition?
When children are moving around the circle greeting each of their classmates by name it gives them a sense of
recognition of each classmate. As they greet them with eye contact and a smile it sets a positive tone towards
the other person and hopefully helps set the other student to a good start of their day.

How does the greeting help children learn names and practice hospitality?
Greeting each student by name and a simple hello helps learn each students’ names. If names haven’t been
learned yet, then that will give them the opportunity to introduce each other. Introductions by name practices
hospitality by having a welcoming feeling in the classroom.

What social skills are children learning and/or practicing during greeting?
Students are learning how to use listening skills by greeting each other as they take turns. Moving about the
room as they are greeting each other helps with socialization skills since they are going to each classmate and
teacher in the group.
TIME FOR SHARING!

•Students will sit in the circle and share about what their favorite insect is. After
each student shares what their favorite insect is, they may choose up to five
students to ask a question or give them a positive comment about what they
shared.

•Ex:

•Me: My favorite insect is a ladybug.

•Student 1 question: What makes it your favorite insect?

•Me: I love lady bugs because they are small and cute with black polka dots on a
red shell.

•Student 2: I also love ladybugs!

•Questions and Answers:

•What are the community-building elements of this sharing?

•By having students share a subject about themselves it is letting the other kids learn a little bit about their peers and what they
like. As they share something like this daily it could help build on to their elements of sharing like building blocks. The teacher
can ask about different things that are on a personal level build a background of the students and they learn about each other in the
process. Then they open up more about being able to share because the students can respond to what they like by asking questions
or making comments.
•How does this sharing help set a positive tone for learning?
•I think this helps each student set a positive tone because it allows them to share something that could be exciting to them. Most
students love to tell things about themselves and that will help create a positive atmosphere as they share things that they love.
•What social skills are listeners practicing?
•The students practice social skills as listeners because they are engaging in the group activity by practicing good active listening
skills. They also are showing empathy to each other by being able to ask questions showing that they care about what the student
stated. Being able to sit and listen quietly also shows the student that they respect each other by listening. The students have
effective communication when they are speaking to each other about what they share.

library for the day.
Questions and Answers:
How does the teacher introduce the activity?
The teacher will tell the students about an exciting activity she has planned. Sunglasses would have been bought to pass out to
the students to let them have a hint that they would be getting some fun in the sun. As she passes out the sunglasses, she
would tell the students about going outside to do a nature scavenger hunt. Then she would tell them to get into groups of four
and pass out the worksheets along with one I-pad per group of four students.
What social skills are children practicing?
Treasure hunts are a good way to practice some social skills within the group of students because they are exploring. They
work cooperatively together which can help build friendships while they are doing something fun and using teamwork. They
can also take turns while doing this activity and problem solve.
What academic skills are children practicing?
Academic skills such as reading comprehension, skimming quickly over what all they need to look for, looking at pictures and
following the directions to find each item. Adding in a timer on a hunt will also increase the speed of their thinking process.
