Alexander Fleming (1881-1955)

O was a medical microbiologist.

O comes from a modest family of farmers

O was married twice, having a son with his first

wife
O 1908 - obtains the Cheadley Medal for his work
Acute Bacterial Infection

O Under the guidance of his teacher (Almroth Wright),


Alexander Fleming conducts research on leprosy and
plague, and other diseases, but, due to the lack of
volunteers to experiment, he tests the vaccines on him
and his family.

O 1909 receives the diploma of specialist surgeon.

O 1921 - Discovered a natural enzyme that kills bacteria -


lysozyme.
O 1928 - discovered penicillin produced by the mold
Penicillium notatum.

O 1940 - Fleming with two English biochemists - Ernest


Boris Chain and Norman George Heatley - and an
Australian doctor - Howard Walter Florey - isolated
and prepared in a purified and concentrated state
penicillin, one of the great achievements of mankind.

O 1944 - Receives the distinction of Sir, and a year later


becomes a member of the Royal Society.

O 1945 - laureate of the Nobel Prize for Physiology and


Medicine
