What is Genre?
 Genres describes types of activities such as, for
example , prayers, sermons, songs,and
poems,which regularly occur in society.

 They represent a nexus between an

individual’s actions and a socially defined
context.

 The term ‘genre’ categorizes texts on the basis

of external criteria.
What is Text Type?

 They represent groupings of texts which are

similar in linguistic form, irrespective of
genre.
 They are related to the “discourse modes”:
patterns to organize texts which do not have
unique functions in themselves but enter into
many genres.
 Examples: narrative, descriptive,
argumentative, expository, interactive…
Genre vs. Text Type
TASK: Analize the following
texts and classify them.
CONCLUSION
 Just as the same genre can differ greatly in its
linguistic characteristics, the same text type can
occur in different kinds of genre.
 More than one genre may share the same text
type.
 Different genres can be quite similar linguistically.

 The terms ‘genre’ and ‘text type’ thus represent

different, yet complementary perspectives on
texts.
