ACIDS

Hydrochloric Acid Sulphuric Acid

Definition of acids
Substances that release H+ ions in a solution are
called acids.
Facts of acids are :->
1. The word “acid” means sour in latin.
2. If a substance is an acid it is called acidic.
3. Examples - lemon juice , vinegar, tartaric
acid.
Acids
1. Acids are those substances which are sour in taste.
2. Release H+ ions in aqueous solution.
3.Corrode metals.
4.ph less than 7.
5.The strength of acids and bases depends on the number
of H+ ions.
Properties of Acids
1. Acids that give rise to more H+ ions are said to be strong acids, while
acids that have less H+ ions are said to be weak acids.

2. Our stomach produces hydrochloric acid which helps in digestion of

food without harming the stomach.

3. Bacteria present in the mouth produce acids by degradation of sugar

and left over food particles remaining in the mouth after eating.

4. Bee sting, leaves of nettle plant and the sting of red ant injects methanoic
(formic) acid which cause burning pain.
List of organic acid with their natural source
Organic acid Natural source
Oxalic acid tomatoes
Acitic acid vinegar
Lactic acid curd
Malic acid green apples
Citric acid orange
Formic acid bee sting
Tartaric acid tamarind

Reaction with metal

Observation of reaction of acid with metal

Hydrogen gas can be tested by using pop

sound test. When a lighting candle is brought
near the mouth of the test tube which
contains hydrogen gas the candle will lit off
with a pop sound.
Reaction of acid with metal
hydrogen carbonate
Observation of reaction of acid
with metal Hydrogen carbonate

CO2 gas can be tested by lime water test when

co2 is passed through lime water it turns
milky due to the formation of calcium
carbonate.
Reaction of acid with base
Observation of reaction of acid
with base

When acid reacts with base salt and

water are formed such reaction is
called neutralization reaction.
Reaction of acid with metal oxide

When an acid reacts with metal

oxide salt and water are formed.
