Poem of dust of snow
-- Robert frost
Characters-crow, poet, hemlock tree
Frost was born on March 26, 1874, in San
Francisco. Following the death of his alcoholic
father, he moved to Massachusetts in 1885.
Although Frost was eager to become a poet,
he dropped out of Dartmouth College after
less than one full semester and went on to
work in a handful of jobs in which he
struggled to be successful.
Frost was ultimately awarded so many
honorary degrees that he famously sewed
them into a blanket. His career continued to Born: March 26, 1874, San

Hemlock tree- A true hemlock is a tall pyramidal tree with
purplish or reddish brown bark, slender horizontal or drooping
branches, and short blunt leaves that grow from woody
cushionlike structures on the twigs. The small cones hang from
the branch tips and retain their scales when they fall.
The black crow is commonly a symbol of death and fear.
Since the crow is not associated with goodness, it is ironic that in this
poem, it is doing a good deed by shaking off the snow.
Setting of a poem
A poem presents a perfect setting.
There are four elements in the
poem, all these elements match
one another. The snow stands for
depression, the hemlock tree is a
symbol of sadness. The crow is
considered as ominous. The poet's
mood was also sad but suddenly
the way in which the crow shook
the hemlock tree and falling of the
dust of snow change poet's mood.

Theme of the poem

The short poem by Robert Frost throws light upon the unimaginable healing
power of nature and tiny things. From a bad mood to ill-health, there is
nothing that can’t be cured by nature. The author was experiencing one
such bad day when a crow’s movement near a hemlock tree dusted snow
upon him. The snow instantly makes him happier. His day gets a lot better.
Thus, the supremacy of nature as a whole made him realise how petty his
problem was. The fact that hemlock tree is poisonous combined with crow
being the indicator of doom and fear are used in the poem as the carriers of
happiness in the life of narrator is ironical. The poet, through these objects
has tried to highlight that sometimes creatures linked with negative aspects
of life can be the bringer of change and happiness. Being outdoors in
nature, with all it’s unpredictability can benefit anyone, anywhere at any
time.
