ABOUT THE POET
ROBERT FROST-

Robert Lee Frost (March 26, 1874 – January 29, 1963) was an American
poet. His work was initially published in England before it was
published in the United States. Known for his realistic depictions of
rural life and his command of American colloquial speech , Frost
frequently wrote about settings from rural life in New England in the
early twentieth century, using them to examine complex social and
philosophical themes.
Frost was honored frequently during his lifetime and is the only poet
to receive four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry. He became one of America's
rare "public literary figures, almost an artistic institution.He was
awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1960 for his poetic works.
On July 22, 1961, Frost was named poet laureate of Vermont.
Robert Frost was born in San Francisco, California,
to journalist William Prescott Frost, Jr., and
Isabelle Moodie. His mother was a Scottish
immigrant, and his father descended from
Nicholas Frost of Tiverton, Devon, England, who
had sailed to New Hampshire in 1634 on the
Wolfrana.
Frost was a descendant of Samuel Appleton, one
of the early settlers of Ipswich, Massachusetts, and
Rev. George Phillips, one of the early settlers of
Watertown, Massachusetts.
In 1894, he sold his first poem, "My Butterfly. An
Elegy" (published in the November 8, 1894, edition
of the New York Independent) for $15 ($443 today)
THEME OF POEM

Through the poem Dust of Snow Robert Frost is trying to shatter all the
believes that human have about the thing they consider ill - omens. He tells
this through the example of a crow that is considred as a bad omen and
signifier of darkness and gloominess . He also tries to put forward the view
that sometimes ever small things or incidents have big impact on our lives .

SNOW
The poem is set on wintry days . In the first stanza , the poet describes a simple
natural happening . The snow is falling heavily . The snowy flakes have covered the
top of the trees . The poet is standing under a hemlock tree . The movement and
alighting of a crow on that tree , make he dust of snowfall on the poet . The crow , a
symbol of ill omen and the hemlock tree , associated with a person, is not auspicious
things . However , in the second stanza , the falling of snowflakes and the scene
leaves a tremendous effect on the mental state and mood of the poet . So far , the
day has been quite gloomy and wastage for him . But this natural happening
suddenly brings the desired change in his mood . It gladdens his heart . He realises
that the falling of snowflakes in him has saved the day . Now he has no regret as the
whole of the day has not gone waste . The moments of the snowfall on him has saved
the day . They have brought a change in his mood and gladdened and uplifted his
spirits

POETIC DEVICE

ALLITERATION: Alliteration is the repetition of same consonant sound in the nearby words.

RHYME SCHEME - Rhyme Scheme is the pattern of rhyming lines in a stanza or throughout the
poem. The rhyme scheme in the Dust of Snow is :
“The way a crow -A
Shook down on me - B
The dust of snow - A
From a hemlock tree - B

MESSAGE OF POEM

The message conveyed through the poem Dust of Snow by Robert Frost is
that in life we can vary easily find positivity out of negative things too . A true
frame of mind with a positive feel can vey easily come out of any negativity of
life to live t the fullest with vigour and valour
