OPTIMIZATION

Question to Ponder
How do you maximize
or minimize something
when you go to school?
Reflect on this!

Noticed it?
Logical decisions in real life are
made by optimizing some
quantities (objectives) that depend
on things we can control
(variables).
Example
Recall: Mathematical Mo
deling
• Functions are used to describe physic
al phenomena. For example:
• The number of people y in a certain area th
at is infected by an epidemic after some ti
me t;
• The concentration c of a drug in a person’
s bloodstream t hours after it was taken;
• The mice population y as the snake
po
pulation x changes, etc.
Let’s Analyze
• We model physical phenomena to help us predict what wil
l happen in the future. We do this by finding or constr
ucting a function that exhibits the behavior that has a
lready been observed. In the first example above, we wa
nt to find the function y(t). For example, if y(t) = 10
00·2−t, then we know that initially, there are y(0) =
1000 affected patients. After one hour, there are y(1)
= 1000·2−1 = 500 affected patients.
• Observe that the independent variable here is time t an
d that the quantity y depends on t. Since y is dependen
t on t, it now becomes possible to optimize the value o
f y by controlling at which time t you will measure y.
Let’s Analyze
