How to solve

problems using
chain rule
what is chain rule?

•It is the way to find the derivative when you

have a more complicated equation, that is a
function inside a larger, outer function.
Formula:
dy/dx=dy/du•du/dx
• In words, the derivative of a composition of
functions is the derivative of the outer function
evaluated at the inner function, times the
derivative of the inner function.

• derivative derivative
of OUTSIDE of INSIDE
• dy/dx = function, leaving • function
• inside alone
Example No.1

Find dy/dx
(or “find the derivative”)
y=(3x+1)^ 7
How do you know when
you need it?
lets play a game…

CHAIN RULE or
NO CHAIN RULE
3x+1
X^7
(3x+1)^7
(x²+1)^7
example no.2

Find the derivative

h(x)=(x²+5x-6)^9
h’(x)=9(x²+5x-6)^8•(2x+5)

or dh/dx
chain rule or no chain rule?

X9
(x-6)^9
(x²+5x-6)^9
Solve problems using chain rule…

1.d/dx=[5x+3]^4
=4[5x+3]³ [5]
=20(5x+3)³

2.d/dx=[sec(4x)]
=sec(4x)tan(4x)•4
3.d/dx=[lnx]^7
=7[lnx]^6•1/x
=7(lnx)^6
x
4.√x³-7= d/dx[x³-7]^½
= ½ [x³-7]ˉ½ [3x²]
= 3x²/2(x³-7)½
=3x²/2(x³-7)
