Injuries and
Rehabilitation

Prepared by: Wynne Joy Alquizar, HUMSS - Athens

What is injury?
Sports injuries are injuries that occur
when engaging in sports or exercise.
CAUSES OF
INJURIES IN
SPORTS
EXTRINSIC RISKS
01 POOR TECHNIQUE
Any exercise or sport performed repetitively with bad
form is a recipe for injury. Poor technique can also lead
to more acute injuries; this can be common with
misuse of exercise machines in the gym for example,
where a muscle or area of soft tissue can be suddenly
stretched.
02 ENVIRONMENT
Environmental factors like extreme heat or
cold, high altitude and air pollution can
elevate heart rates, make it harder to breathe,
and impair the ability to exercise.
03 CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENTS
Carrying a piece of sports equipment can
compound the effects of unanticipated movements
and other variables that can increase injury risk,
experts said. To put it simply, carrying a big stick
can take an athlete's focus off the task at hand.
INTRINSIC RISKS
01 OVERTRAINING

A lack of adequate recovery time

coupled with amplified intensity of
training.
02 OVERUSE

Caused by repeated actions which apply

pressure to a certain group of muscles,
joint area, or soft tissue.
03 IMPROPER WARM UP

Failure to perform a proper warm-up can

cause injuries as the muscles and joints
are not prepared for exercise.
03 LACK OF NUTRIENTS
Poor nutrition can lead to fatigue,
dehydration and poor health; all of which
negatively affect athletic performance.
04 AGE
Aging leads to a decrease in overall lung capacity
and a decline in the ability of the lungs to move
oxygen from the air into the bloodstream. This
means less overall strength and endurance. As
we age, we lose both muscle strength and muscle
mass.
How to prevent sports
injuries?
Stay conditioned
Keeping your body is shape over
the summer is one of the best
ways to avoid injury. Conditioning
helps ensure that muscles stay
strengthened that are used during
play.
Hydrate

Dehydration can easily be

avoided by drinking water
before and after exercise.
Rest
Athletes should take one to two days
off during the week to rest. Resting
during practices and games is also
essential. This will help prevent
overuse of muscles.
Warm up and stretch

Stretching is important
before any activity because it
releases muscle tension.
Use recommended safety
equipment.
Wearing proper equipment
will not guarantee that no
injuries will occur but it
lowers the chances.
Play safe

Rules and regulations are set

in place for a reason – to help
prevent injuries.
KEEP THESE IN MIND. KEEP SAFE.

so remember: use an image instead of
