What we are going to study in this chapter…?
 The different shape of the Moon
 Celestial bodies
 Constellations
 The solar system
 The Sun
 The Earth

 The Moon
 The Planet

 Asteroids

 Meteoroids

 The Universe
In the night sky we see bright stars and moon.
However the shape and size of the moon keep
changing at different times.

Why don’t we see the stars and moon during day time?
We don’t,due to the bright sunshine.
The different shapes of the Moon
FULL MOON NIGHT Or Purnima:
A night when the moon is visible from
the earth as a full sphere is called,
the Full Moon Night/ Poornima,
and it happens once in a month.

NEW MOON NIGHT Or Amavasya:

The fifteenth day after the full moon
night, when the moon is not visible
in all the sky, is called the New
Moon night.
CELESTIAL BODIES
 The sun, the moon and all those objects
shinning in the night sky are called, Celestial
bodies.
 Any bodies outside the earth’s atmosphere-
Examples: Moon, stars, asteroids & meteoroids etc.
Some celestial  They have their own heat and light
bodies are very big  They are know as stars.
and hot.  Example: Sun

If sun is a star then why other stars are

not so bright like Sun? Why they are
so tiny? Why don’t we feel their heat?
 Reason: Distance; E.g. Aeroplane
also looks small when it is flying at a
great height.
CONSTELLATIONS
What are Constellations?
 The group of stars which forms various patterns.
These are called, Constellations.
 Ursa Major or Big bear is one such constellation.
 One of the most easily recognizable constellation is
the SAPTARISHI.
 It is a group of seven stars that form a part of
Ursa Major.
 In ancient times, people used to determine
directions during the night with the help of stars.
 The north star indicates the north direction. It is
also called pole star. It always remains in the same
direction in the sky.
 We can locate the position of the Pole stars with the
help of Saptaishi.
