VECTOR QUANTITIES
AND
SCALAR QUANTITIES
SCALAR QUANTITIES – quantities that are described only
by a magnitude or simply a single element of a number field
such as real number accompanied by units of measurements.
Example:
Distance -----------------> 5 inches
SCALAR QUANTITIES – quantities that are described only
by a magnitude or simply a single element of a number field
such as real number accompanied by units of measurements.
Example:
Area -------------------> 6 cm2

4cm

3cm
SCALAR QUANTITIES – quantities that are described only

such as real number accompanied by units of measurements.
Example:
Volume -------------------> 1 L
SCALAR QUANTITIES – quantities that are described only
by a magnitude or simply a single element of a number field
such as real number accompanied by units of measurements.
Example:
Temperature -------------> 37 °C
VECTOR QUANTITIES – quantities that are described by
both magnitude and direction.
Example:
Displacement ------------> 5 m, 45° NW
VECTOR QUANTITIES – quantities that are described by
both magnitude and direction.
Example:
Force ------------------> 10N going left
VECTOR QUANTITIES – quantities that are described by
both magnitude and direction.
Example:
Velocity ------------> 25 m/s going N

ADDITION OF
VECTOR QUANTIES
Two vectors can be added together to determine the result (or
resultant). Observe the following summation of vectors:

5N
+ 2N
= 7N

5N
+ -2 N
= 3N

5N
+ -12 N
= -7 N

resultant). Observe the following summation of vectors:

+ = ???
