Adjectives

What is an adjective?
An adjective is a word that tells us more about a noun. It "describes" or "modifies"
a noun (The big dog was hungry). In these examples, the adjective is in bold and the
noun that it modifies is in italics.
Examples
⬩ A green car
⬩ The sky became dark.
⬩ They were empty

An adjective often comes before a
noun.
• A blue ball
• A dark sky
• An interesting story

Sometimes, an adjective comes after
a verb.
⬩ The bouncing blue ball.
⬩ The sky became dark.
⬩ His story seemed interesting.

Adjectives can also modify pronouns.
⬩ They were empty.
⬩ I thought it seemed strange.

Descriptive adjectives are the most commonly used type of adjective and they add
meaning to a noun or pronoun by describing its qualities. There are thousands of
descriptive adjectives that exist in the English language, so it's not difficult to come
up with one. They can tell what size something is, how something tastes, what
something smells like, and so much more.

Petite
Large
Scaly
Bumpy
Shrill
Muffled

An interrogative adjective describes a noun that is used in a question. Interrogative
adjectives include the following words: what, which, whose.

Examples :
⬩ Which jacket belongs to Taylor?
⬩ What book are you writing your report about?
⬩ Whose phone is ringing?

An indefinite adjective is used to describe a noun in a non-specific sense.

The most common indefinite adjectives are any, each, few, many, much, most,
several, and some.

They are often used to describe a noun to show an element of uncertainty.

Indefinite adjectives should not be confused with indefinite pronouns. Indefinite


adjectives modify nouns or pronouns. Indefinite pronouns are standalone pronouns

⬩ Every adjective and adverb can be written in one of three degrees:
⬩ The Positive Degree. This offers no comparison. It just tells us about the
existence of a quality. For example:
▫ adjectives: slow, beautiful, happy
▫ adverbs: slowly, beautifully, happily
⬩ The Comparative Degree. This compares two things to show which has the
lesser or greater degree of the quality. For example:
▫ adjectives: slower, more beautiful, happier
▫ adverbs: more slowly, more beautifully, more happily
⬩ The Superlative Degree. This compares more than two things to show which
has the least or greatest degree of the quality.For example:
▫ adjectives: slowest, most beautiful, happiest
▫ adverbs: most slowly, most beautifully, most happily
