WHAT IS INTERNET?

a global computer network providing a

variety of information and communication
facilities, consisting of interconnected
networks using standardized
communication protocols.
HISTORY

Internet History starts in the 1960s. The first

workable prototype of the Internet came in
1960s with the creation of ARPANET, or the
Advanced Research Projects Agency Network.
Originally founded by the U.S. Department of
Defense, ARPANET used packet switching to
allow multiple computers to communicate on a
single network.
The technology continued to grow in the 1970s
after scientists Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf
developed Transmission Control Protocol and
Internet Protocol a communications model that
set standards for how data could be transmitted
between multiple networks.
In 1982, the PhoneNet system is
established and is connected to ARPANET
and the first commercial network, Telenet.
This broadens access to the internet and
allows for email communication between
multiple nations of the world.
In 1990, ARPANET is decommissioned. Tim Berners-Lee
and his colleagues at CERN develop hypertext markup
language (HTML) and the uniform resource locator
(URL). A watershed year for the internet comes in 1995:
Microsoft launches Windows 95; Amazon, Yahoo and
eBay all launch; Internet Explorer launches; and Java is
created, allowing for animation on websites and
creating a new flurry of internet activity. In 1999, the
music and video piracy controversy intensifies with the
launch of Napster. The first internet virus capable of
copying and sending itself to a user’s address book is
discovered in 1999.
The 2000s see Google’s meteoric rise to
domination of the search engine market. This
decade also sees the
rise and proliferation of Wi-Fi — wireless internet
communication — as well as mobile internet
devices like smartphones and, in 2005, the
first-ever internet cat video.
HOW INTERNET USED IN
DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES
Call Centers -Call Centers provide phone
support for companies all around the globe, and is
one example of an industry that relies almost
exclusively on VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
in order to operate.

Trading Companies and Day Traders

-Trading Companies and Day Traders are also
dependent on internet reliability to keep their
edge in an industry where a fraction of a second
can make a massive financial impact for investors,
so a reliable connection is essential.
Education -Internet access opens doorways to
a wealth of information, knowledge, and
educational resources. Teachers use online
materials to prepare lessons, and students use
them to extend their range of learning.

Services firms -Services firms also depend

heavily on highly reliable connectivity to the cloud.
Take Web Development and Design firms as an
example.

Financial Institutions -Financial Institutions

in general, not just trading firms, such as
commercial banks, investment banks and credit
unions, also depend heavily on centralized systems
for operation, as these must be accessed by the
local branches via the internet.
News Media agencies -News Media
agencies depend on fast, reliable internet for up-
to-the-minute news in a world that is hooked on
quick facts and instant feedback.

Restaurants -Restaurants use the internet not

only for payments, but also for ordering,
interactive menus, keeping track of produce,
maintaining inventory and facilitating take-out
orders that are made online or over the phone.

Medical centers -Medical centers, hospitals

and healthcare providers have become
increasingly dependent on internet reliability in
order to store, access and share patient data with
other hospitals or institutions.
Insurance providers -Insurance providers of
all types rely on the internet to access the various
databases that are used to handle claims and
decide on the cost of coverage for clients.
POSITIVE EFFECT

• easy access to information

• easy to connect with some family and
friends
