What is Discourse?

Discourse is a language context

that exists in a conversation or
communication interaction.
Discourse analysis

Discourse analysis is a study that examines

or analyzes language used naturally.

Discourse analysis is studied from two

aspects, namely
● Internal aspect
● external aspects
Conversation Analysis
 DA and Conversation Analysis
(CA) approaches have
similiarity, they are both talk
about language and action. The
only difference is on the focus of
analysis.
 Focus to talks in interaction.
 A study on people talking
together, oral communication, or
language use.
 CA use inductive approach. For
search is based on records of
naturally occurring
conversations.
Content Analysis

We also need to differentiate

between DA and content
analysis. The difference is on
the depth of analysis. DA
requires broader analysis and
also DA cannot be separated
from content analysis, because
content analysis is the part of
DA.
Critical Discourse
Analysis

 Focus to social and political issues.

 The ways discourse structures enact,
confirm, legitimate, reproduce, or
challenge relations of power and
dominance in society.
 CDA attempts to describe, interpret,
and explain the relationship between
the forms and function of language.
 CDA concern “not only what is said,
but what is left out, not only
 what is present in the text, but also
what is absent”
Historical Overview

 DA appear the 1969s and early

1970s.
 Sellig Harris published a paper
with the title DA, interested in the
distribution of linguistic elements
in extended texts.
 Dell Hymes provide sociological
perspectives with the study of
speech in social settings.
 Searle (1969), and Grice (1975)
were also influential in the study
of language as social action.
Why Discourse
Analysis
Discourse analysis is important in
the general field of linguistics, and
in the specific branches of language
teaching and translation,
respectively. Because with discourse
people do things, it is fundamental
to take a social perspective when
analyzing language beyond the
sentence and language within
context.

discourse analysis is a method that used to disassemble the meaning or
message of communication contained in a text both textually and
contextually so that the meaning extracted from a text or communication
message is not only seen from the text that is clearly written only more
than that.
