Meaning

 According to the Brundtland commission Act, 1987, sustainable development


can be defined as “the process which fulfills the needs of the present
generation without challenging the ability of future generations to fulfill
their needs.”
 This implies that resources should not be fully exploited but properly utilized.
Features
Sustained rise in real per capita income and economic welfare
Rational use of natural resources

- no exploitation
- rationally used
Ability of future generations to meet their needs

- wake of competitive growth


- use renewable and not non- renewable resources
Check and awareness on pollution

- environmental pollution is a social element of cost


- Humans should discard such activities
Strategies
 Input efficient technology
- output is maximized
- moderate the stress on resource endowment
 Use of environment- friendly sources of energy
- LPG and CNG instead of petrol and diesel
- People in rural areas should avoid using wood and use gobar gas
plants instead.
 Integrated rural development
- will generate employment opportunities
- transportation needs will reduce with checking of rural-urban
migration
- reduce stress on social infrastructure in urban areas
 Using solar energy for electricity
- India has abundant sunlight which is a rich source of energy
- Conversion of solar energy has helped in economic growth as
as well as sustainable development
 Shift to organic farming
- Using chemical fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides have
damaged soil fertility
- Organic farming focuses on soil health than plant health.
 Manage the wastes
- Disposing industrial and household waste and litters in streams is
harmful
- Using them as manure or compost for organic farming is a better
choice.
 Stringent laws on the disposal of chemical effluents
- Chemical effluents are disposed into water bodies polluting it and
are harming the marine life.
- Serious violation of these laws must be checked and strict action
should be taken.
 Awareness to conserve natural assets for inter- generational equity
- Equal opportunities for present and future
- At the macro level, this is absolutely negligible

 Public means of transport
- Rapid, comfortable and economical
- Some means of transports should be extended to the urban or
sub- urban areas to prevent private vehicular traffic.
- Environmental pollution will also be reduced (air and noise pollution)
