SHOT PUT
Shot Put Rules

■ Once the Atlete’s name is called. They have


60 seconds to release the shot.
■ The shot must be close to the neck and
resting on the shoulder, while keeping it in
that position the entire time until it is
released.
■ No padding or extra equipment is necessary.
Shot Put Rules
■ The shot must be released above the height of the
shoulder with one hand.
■ The The ball should be put (i.e. pushed) rather than
thrown with an overhead motion. At no time may the shot
move behind the plane of the shoulders.
■ The atlete is permitted to touch the inside surface of the
stop board, but neither the top nor the bottom of the circle
or stop board may be touched or passed.
■ The shot has to land within the legal sector (34.92)
■ The competitor must exit the circle from the back.
Fouls

■ The Player must not pause within the circle before throwing motion.
■ The Player allows the shot to drop below the shoulder.
■ The shot lands outside the boundaries of the sector or touches the
sector line.
■ The Player leaves the circle before the shot has landed or the
competitor fails to leave the circle from the back.
■ The Player touches the top/end of the stop board, the top of the iron
ring, or steps or touches on/outside of the line of the circle.
Scoring

■ Unlike other team sports, shot Put is scored based on distance.


This means the atlete will earn points and be ranked based on how
far they throw the shot. This distance more specifically is the
length measure from the inside of the circle all the way to the very
first mark that was made in the ground by the shot. Under national
rules, and in competition, this distance is measured in centimeters
and therefore in order to standardize scores, the distance recorded
must be rounded down to the nearest whole centimeter.
