• A condition that causes difficulty or 
suffering:

IMPOVERISHED /ɪMˈPɑː.Vɚ.ɪƩT/

• Extremely poor
• There’s no money to help impoverished
communities build basic facilities like
schools and medical centres.
AFFLUENT /ˈÆF.LU.ƏNT/

• Having a lot of money or


possessions; rich:
• In affluent suburbs like this one, house
prices are extremely high.
PROSPERITY /PRɑːˈSPER.Ə.T̬ I/

• The state of being successful
 and having a lot of money
• There’s a direct relationship between a
good education system and the
economic prosperity of a country.
MAKE ENDS MEET

• To have just enough money to 


pay for the things that you need
to live
• Even though I got a pay rise last year, I
still find it difficult to make ends meet.
WELL OFF

• Rich:
• My grandparents used to be relatively well off,
but they lost all their money in bad investments.
• Having a lot of or a number of something:

 needs

• Not having the things that are necessary for a 


pleasant life, such as enough money, food, or
good living conditions

stands at around 50% and social problems are rife.

LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS

• To spend less on your lifestyle than

any of the things needed to live:
