Lesson 6:
Euphemism
- Is a polite and indirect expression that is used to substitute the unpleasant or harsh
words or phrases.

Some example of Euphemism

Common Word Euphemism

1. to die to pass away


2. euthanize put to sleep
3. homeless on the streets
4. bald a little thin on top
5. accidental death collateral damage
6. overweight big-boned
7. maid domestic engineer/ helper
8. garbage man sanitation engineer
9. go to the room use the rest room
Pronoun
- is a word used to substitute the noun

Antecedent
- is a word or phrase that is represented by another word. (ante =
“before”)
- The pronoun antecedent is the noun that the pronoun is referring
to.
Examples: singular antecedent

Lorna is busy doing her assignment.


John called his friend.

Examples : Plural antecedent

Kristine and Sheila are busy on their trip.


Isabel and Francisco like to save their money.
Pronoun
- express number

Singular Pronoun – replaces the singular noun

Example: Mark inspires his classmates and friends


He inspires his classmate and friends.

Plural Pronoun – replaces the plural noun

Example: The cats played with the yarn.


They played with the yarn.
Pronoun – Expressing the gender of the noun.
Masculine Gender – he, his, him

Feminine Gender – she, her, hers

Neuter – it, its

Examples:

bridesmaid – she, her, hers

library – it, its

grandfather – he, him, his


Possessive Case
- Expresses possession or ownership

mine his hers ours theirs

Examples:

1. The dog is mine.


2. The ring is hers
3. The cat is yours.
4. We shall finally have what is rightfully ours.
5. This is his writing.
