husband Harry, the restaurant is now run by
their daughters, Maylia and Diana. It's no
surprise the concept stuck: Hardena offers the
local Indonesian population a taste of home,
especially on holidays, and its affordable
prices and long list of vegetarian options also
draw vegans and vegetarians.

foods from traditional recipes with a Javanese bent.
Hardena has received plenty of recognition over the
years and is commonly cited as the best Indonesian
food in Philly.

Rendang

popular items on the menu.

fermented tempeh

Fresh tempeh is the star in

Hardena/Waroeng Surabaya's
"DYNAMITE" fritters.

ginger paste, and coconut milk and
then fried in a coating of ginger paste
until crispy. It is served with rice and a
house-made spicy sambal sauce
Conclusion You would never expect to find a restaurant in the middle of this South Philly
neighborhood. But on the corner of a narrow street, you will find one of the best
Indonesian food places in Philly. The menu changes every day, you'll have an option of
6-8 Indonesian entrees. There is a variety of curry, stews and stir fries to choose from or
you can order off a menu. There is something for everyone, including vegetarians and
those who don't eat gluten. Very tiny place to expect to wait for a table if you are eating
in.
