Why Implement Effective Storage Procedures?
Maintenance
Management
 At Storage Point  On Return To Work
 No Corrosion Protection  Unplanned Downtime &
 No Fluid System Protection Production Loss
 No Electrical System  Contaminated Systems
Protection  Long-term Component
 No Rubber / Seal Protection Damage
 No Storage Lubrication  Reduced Resale Value, Poor
 No Paint Protection Paint Condition, Unreliability
 Diversion Of Financial &
Cost $
Physical Resources
 No Warranty Support

Incorrect Storage Implications
Maintenance
Management
 Improper storage of equipment can cause
 Corrosion of cylinder rods, spool stems, engine cylinder liners, valve
mechanisms etc. leading to failure of hydraulic systems & engine seizures
 Contamination of oils & diesel fuel due to moisture, growth of small
organisms seriously harming hydraulic system, engine lubrication system and
fuel system.
 Hardening & cracking of rubber components like hoses, seals, tires rubber
tracks etc.
 Short circuits in the electrical systems leading to fire, nagging electrical
problems due to corrosion of connectors, permanent damage to components
such as alternators, generator slip rings etc.
 Failure in tracks due to seizure of bushes, roller / idler leaks and can affect
efficiency of drive train.
 Damaged paint and affect aesthetics.

Engine Storage Procedures
Maintenance
Management
 Inspect paint & components for damage, replace if necessary.
 Lubricate/grease all joints and, apply large amount on linkages etc.
 Change all oils & filters as per operations & maintenance manuals.
 VCI Oil, care to be taken to add (or spray) to crankcase, reservoir for
engines with air starter, turbo charger inlet and cylinder walls - all
application areas to be sealed air tight.
 Diesel Fuel, drain from tank, fuel filters and CAT calibrating oil or
commercial biocide to be used as applicable.
 Water Systems to be drained. In case of fresh water systems replace with
approved water and supplemental coolant additive . Do not install drain
plugs in case of raw water systems.
 Batteries to be disconnected, all belts to be loosened
 Install tight waterproof cover

Restoring Engine To Production
Maintenance
Management
 Inspect all rubber components & check cooling system concentration
 Change all oils & filters .
 Put large amount of oil on the camshaft, cam followers and valve
mechanism.
 Water Systems , cleanse and refit drain plugs & follow cold weather
recommendations if applicable.
 Hydraulic locks or resistance , turn engine to check
 Fuel system , prime with clean diesel.
 Pressure lubrication procedure - follow for minimum wear in initial run
 Initial operation, turn engine at cranking speed till engine oil pressure
is present, operate the engine at low idle for 10 minutes.
 Check for leaks for first few hours.

Equipment Storage Procedures- Long Term
Maintenance
Management
 Inspect paint & components for damage and perform scheduled
maintenance as per operation & maintenance manual.
 Park machines on level ground, track machines to be parked on timber
to prevent freezing.
 Tires and rims to be removed from machines or at least removed of load.
 Electric powered machines not to be stored in an outside environment
 Tracks , tension to reduced in steel tracks and machines with sealed
tracks should be exercised.
 VCI Oil to be added to all lubrication systems & tanks, preservative to be
applied to all areas for preventing corrosion and thin coat of Cylix33 to
cylinder rods.
 Electrical components, 1890 Protective Sealer to be applied, disconnect
plug-in lead at the alternator, in case of battery removal.
 Engine, storage procedure remain same
 Check stored machine every 45-60 days.

Machine Storage Procedures - Short Term
Maintenance
Management
 Storage, procedures for Engine & Machine remain same
 Fuel tank to be either completely full or 10% and 0.5 liter of VCI
Oil to be added
 Exercise, Inspect thoroughly & exercise machine every 45 days for
30min exercise period.
 Operate power driven components at least once.
 Machine removal, inspect all rubber components and perform
scheduled maintenance as per operation & maintenance manual.
 Check & Adjust, various pressures, track tension, tires etc.
 Engine removal, procedure remains same - follow pressure
lubrication procedure
 Check for leaks for first few hours.

Generator Storage Procedures
Maintenance
Management
 Storage area should be a dry place , to minimize condensation.
 SRCR type generator, lift brushes off slip ring to prevent damage
due to chemical reaction.
 Resistance check, of windings to be carried out to provide base
line for moisture determination.
 Removal, before starting check insulation resistance for moisture
 , remove preferably by using forced heated air and by canvas &
heating lamps.
 Megger checks, perform before initial startup and at least every
three months if generator is operating in a humid environment.

Marine Gear Storage
Maintenance
Management
 Clean thoroughly and cover with quality paint

 VCI oil , add at the rate of 2% of lube oil capacity if the unit is to
be stored for more than six months.

 Operate for a short time to circulate oil through gear

 Store in a dry area

 Multipurpose grease , to be applied to all outside moving parts

 Removal - replace all oil and filters
