TENSION MEMBERS:
 Structural members that are subjected to axial
tensile force.
 Any cross-sectional configuration may be used,
since the only determinant of strength is the cross-
sectional area.
 GROSS and NET AREAS
 The usual practice is to drill or punch
standard holes with a diameter larger than
the fastener diameter.
 To account for possible roughness around
the edges of the hole, an addition to the
actual hole diameter is required.

TYPES of TENSION MEMBERS

 Circular Rods
• One of the simplest of tension members
• Difficult to connect to many structures
 Single Angles
• Used in roof trusses

 Double Angles
 Tees
• Used in welded trusses
 Channels
• Bridges and large roof trusses
 W-section
• Bridges and large roof trusses

TYPES of TENSION MEMBERS

 Built-up from plates and rolled shapes

• To have sufficient cross sectional area and rigidity
 Members consisting of more than one section need
to be tied together
 Tie plates or tie bars can be used

 Steel cables
• Suspension bridge
• roof supports

Design Strength:

Tension member can fail by reaching one of the two

limiting states: YIELDING or FRACTURE

 To prevent YIELDING and accompanying

excessive deformation, the stress on the
gross area (Ag) should be less than Fy.

 To prevent FRACTURE, the stress on the

net section (AN ) must be less than FU.
