How has LEAF been

implemented in México
Learning About Forests

In México, LEAF focuses on learning about

the forestal environmental services.
Through the programme topics and cultural
heritage for nature conservation that comes
from the native towns. The most important
tool is reforestation that allows schools to Climate Change

knowledge about the role that forests
play in the sustainable life of our

LEAF encourages environmental education through
awareness among students, teachers, and the
community at large.

LEAF aligns with:

• Global Action Programme (GAP).

• Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

LEAF Award

Schools that complete the Forest Cycle receive a

Certificate of Achievement in recognition of their
work. In several countries, they obtain an award in
the form of a LEAF plaque. Schools work through
the cycle and, once they have completed the cycle,
the school applies for the LEAF Award. Once a
school obtain the award, it could renew it each
year.

The National Operator is responsible

for the evaluation and delivery of
the LEAF award in their own
countries.
Forest Cycle
The Forest Cycle methodology is a series of steps
designed to help schools succeed in their LEAF
goals. While the LEAF Award will be awarded to
schools that complete all essential elements of
the Forest Cycle, it should be remembered that
the programme is flexible and that different
countries will find different routes to achieve the
LEAF Award.

Reproduction of oaks for the
sacred water forest
Since 2012, the schools that participate in FEE
México's educational programmes have been
working with the idea of reforesting and
collecting water in the biological zone called:
Sacred water forest Ajusco-Chichinautzin, one of
the last areas of central forest in México.
Due to the economic value of oak wood,
deforestation in the area has become a severe
problem. Given the relevant ecological role that
tree roots play in facilitating water infiltration and
aquifer recharge, the schools decided to lead an
oak reforestation project to address the problem
of water scarcity.

The objective of this project was to collect and

grow acorns. Also, teach students about the
fragility of forests and the environmental services
that forests provide.
Forest regeneration offers a handful and
sustainable solutions to the problem of water
scarcity by increasing the forest's water
harvesting capacity in the higher areas of the

Schools have become leaders in local
communities. So, the environmental activities
implemented by teachers are well received by the
children's families. Since 2012, participation has
increased dramatically, along with a growing
sense of environmental heritage and good
collaboration between different generations.
