Principles of Management 3

A note on “management”
• General management is not marketing management nor financial
management nor operations management nor human resource
management
• Marketing management versus managing the marketing team. Financial
management versus managing the finance team. etc.
• So ”general management” has two meanings:
1. The overall management of the firm;
2. Managing people to achieve business objectives (such as fulfill the 4 Ps).
3. When those objectives are general, we have #1. When they are specific to a
department or a function of business, we have management of the marketing
team, etc.

4. Plenary: a bit more theory
Principles of Management 3

Plenary: A bit of theory 1

• Last week: business process with one employee
• This week’s task will involve multiple employees
• So the theory of this week involves getting several actors to work
together to exploit the opportunity.

Plenary: A bit of theory 2

• The business process begins with the definition of the opportunity –called
the 4 PS
• This week’s task will involve multiple employees, so the owner must
decide what has to be done and deciding who does what when.
• This decision is an addition to the “backward” part of last week’s business process.
• “Who does what”
• Has a technical name.
• Is like a plan, but one that focusses on allocating tasks.
• A plan is not reality. It is made real by the employees to whom the appropriated
part of the plan is communicated with authority. This authoritative
communication has a technical name.

• Design (more or less the same as last week: describe this process that terminates in a plan)
• Organize
• Recruit (don’t detail this, as it for your Human Resource courses)
• Command

• Remember to describe the process, and the results.

• The owner process (backward from the opportunity) results in the organization and in the commands.
• To get these results, an important part of the owner process is thinking through the operations of the
firm and designing the “forward” part of the business process: listing, allocating and sequencing the
actions of the employees.

How to submit your
presentations
1. Either the class representative submits all the presentations of today’s
workgroups or
2. The representative of each workgroup submits the presentation for that
workgroup.
3. The submission should be made with cc to all members of the of the
workgroup.
4. The presentation can be submitted as a file or as a link. Links are more
convenient for my “follow up” missive.
5. Your presentation should be named following a convention:
PM Week# Monday Beauty (or coffee, etc.)
