External Internal
PATHOGENESIS
O Ingestion of T. solium eggs or proglottid rupture
within the host intestine can cause larvae to migrate
into host tissue and cause cysticercosis.

O The ingested eggs hatch only after their contact with

gastric juice followed by intestinal juices.

O If person is heavily infected with T.solium,

neurocysticercosis epilepsy, seizures,
lesions in the brain, blindness and tumor like
growths.

CASE OF STUDY
 A 25-year-old woman with history of living in pig raising area
was admitted because of worsening headaches. At first the
doctor predicted it as a normal headache because of prolonged
exposure to sunlight.

 The magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) of the brain showed

multiple bihemispheric, parenchymal nodules along with
edematous lesions in the posterior parietal, occipital and right
basal ganglia. An ophthalmic examination was unremarkable.

 The patient was administered with Praziquantel for presumed

neurocysticercosis.
CLINICAL PICTURE
 Cysticercosis in muscles

 Neurocysticercosis

 Ophthalmic cysticercosis

 Subcutaneous cysticercosis
DIAGNOSIS
 Biopsy of infected tissue

 Examination of faeces

 Radiologicaltest
[e.g X-ray, CT scans, MRIs]

 X-ray
to visualize calcified lesions in brain and
muscles
TREATMENT
 Albendazole [combine with steroid]
[400mg twice/day for 15 days and can be repeated]

 Praziquantel more effective and a

safe drug for Neurocysticercosis
[50mg/kg body wt. t.d.s for 15 days]
PREVENTION AND CONTROL
 Earlytreatment of the infected person to reduce the
risk of auto infection or infection of others.

 Proper cooking of pork.

 Suspected infected meat should be condemned or

frozen at -15C for at least 3 days.

 Prevent defecation in soil.

 Sanitarydisposal of human excreta. Pig sties should

be far away from houses.
