CAUSES OF ENDANDERMENT OF ASIATIC LION:

Lions have many nicknames, like 'King of the Jungle' and 'Top of the Food Chain', because they're very
powerful animals that can survive in different environments.
There are several reasons why these lions are endangered. Various causes are:

They are endangered primarily due to humans. The Asiatic lion has been limited to India, specifically in
and near Gir National Park.
 The lions are often killed in order to keep the near by livestock safe.
Illegal trading is another main threat.
Many of the communities surrounding the forest are not well off, receiving a large amount of money
in return for poaching a lion is an attractive prospect for them. So they hunt and kill theseTigers.
 Virus erupted in the Asiatic lion population and killed approximately 30% of the population.
Tuberculosis has also devastated the lion population in Asia.
Climate change is the last threat. In order to adapt to shifting weather patterns and changing habitats,
animals migrate to new places that offer more suitable conditions. As climate change intensifies and the
land becomes more arid and inhospitable, maintaining these habitats becomes more complicated.
Historical vs present range of lions

As we can see situation is Asia is

worse.
In India Project Lion was started in August 2020 on the same lines as Project Tiger and Project Elephant. The six new
sites identified for possible lion relocation under Project Lion in the future include:
 Madhav National Park, Madhya Pradesh
 Sitamata Wildlife Sanctuary, Rajasthan
 Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve, Rajasthan
 Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Madhya Pradesh
 Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Rajasthan
 Jessore-Balaram Ambaji WLS and adjoining landscape, Gujarat

Key facts
1) There are only several hundred Asiatic lions in the wild, and they only live in the Gir Forest, India, in an
area that is smaller than Greater London.
2) Asian lions are slightly smaller than African lions. Unlike African lions, the males do not tend to live with
the females of their pride unless they’re mating or have a large kill.
3) Asian lions used to range from Turkey, across Asia, to eastern India, but the rise of firearms across the
world meant that they were hunted to near-extinction for sport.
4) The male Asiatic lion has a relatively short, sparse and darker mane compared to the fuller mane of the
African lion. As a result, the male Asiatic lion's ears tend to remain visible at all times.
5) The most distinguishing characteristic of the Asiatic lion is the longitudinal fold of skin that runs along its
belly. This is absent in African lions.
6) Today, the remaining wild lions are vulnerable to disease, disaster and potential poaching, and have to live
alongside a growing human population that also needs the land for cattle and crops.
7) The Nationwide national parks are the best place which protect these endangered species.
8) The Anti-encroachment should be strictly enforced. Poaching should be declared as a big crime like
murder, carrying life sentence.
9) The local communities should be involved in tiger preservation projects. All these measures should be
adopted to save Asiatic lions.
