2
INTRODUCTION

● The importance of facial expressions in a social setting i.e. in conveying expressions[1]

● Motive behind correcting facial disfigurement in fetuses
● Challenges faced by surgeons when it comes to producing a ‘corrected’ facial image[2]
● Currently available solutions on the market
● Our proposed solution
● Project benefits
● Final generated prototype

3
WHAT THE CODE DOES - IN A NUTSHELL [2]
4
OUR OBJECTIVE AND THE CHALLENGES

• Create an application that could be used by medical practitioners on

Our Goal: their smartphones

Computing-intensive • The code takes 20 minutes to compile and run on a super-

code computer

Interpreting Facial • The program has difficulty in differentiating between racial features
Images [2] • The program may target differences in features by age as a deformity

5
THE PROPOSED SOLUTIONS

Computing intensive code

• The code will be run in different languages
o C, C++, Java etc.
o The language that compiles and runs the code the fastest will be used
• A powerful laptop will be used to run the code
o Intel Core i9-11900H 8-Core CPU, an NVIDIA RTX 3080 16GB graphics card and 32GB of DDR4 RAM
Interpreting Facial Images [2]
• Run more images that are “normal” through the code
• The images running through the code will have a rating between 1-7
• A survey of images with different levels of deformity will be run

6
WHAT ARE THE STAGES THAT THE
PROJECT WILL GO THROUGH?[

Develop/modify a deep learning algorithm

Train the algorithm by feeding it a large database

of images [2]

Automatic scoring of images from 1

(abnormal) to 7 (normal) [3]

Testing and validation of the network by

inputting novel images into the program

Social testing and validation through surveys[4] 7

ESTIMATED COST - $3547.64

Razer Blade 2021 Laptop - $3,399.99 Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD - $147.65

• One of the most powerful laptops on • Fast read and write speeds
the market • Reliable and will be used to backup
• Best price-to-performance ratio that important files
is at a comfortable price below the
budget
• Required to be able to run the
computing-intensive code

8
SIMPLIFIED TIMELINE

9
CONCLUSION
The code outputs an image of a “normalized” face from a deformed one

The goal is to optimize the code to run on a smartphone

The code will learn to differentiate between natural differences and anomalies

Surveys will be conducted to gain more data – further improving the code
