People The population in Thailand is 67 million, of which around 6 million live in the capital city, Bangkok. The King is a head of state. Legislative-bicameral, with a fully-elected House of Representatives and a partially-elected Senate. Judicial-composed of the Constitutional Tribunal, the Courts of Justice, and the Administrative Courts. Administrative subdivisions: 77 provinces, including Bangkok municipality, subdivided into 877 districts, 7,255 tambon administration, and 74,944 villages. Political parties: Multi-party system; Communist Party is prohibited. Economy Currency The Baht is the standard currency unit. 1 Baht = 100 satangs Bank Notes : 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000 baht Coins : 1, 2, 5, and 10 baht Traditionally the economy has been agriculture-based. 62% of population is employed in industries of rubber, coconut plantations in the southern peninsular region. Thai industries include 2 majors : Major exports (clothing, electrical appliances, jewellery and footwear) Major crops (rice, tobacco, jute, beans and cotton) Work schedule Businesses and government offices are open weekdays from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., with an hour lunch break at noon. In that time they`re actually close. Banks are open weekdays from 8.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Department stores are open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Meeting people When greeting Thai, use word Khun (coon) like “Mr”, or “Mrs”. For example : “John Smith” would be called “Khun John”. Most Thais greet someone by bowing slightly forward while bringing their hands like praying. Useful phrases The official language is Thai, its monosyllabic and tonal. Depending on the tone same word may have different meanings. Thai men and women use different versionsof phrases. For examples : Hello Men: kha Women: khrap Dress code For men , business suits and ties are expected. Follow your counterparts`lead. Also men are can wear safari suits, but not at a first meeting. For women, simple suits or professional dresses are approciate. Avoid wearing solid purple as the color is associated with the royal family. Regulations for Foreign Visitors Foreign nationals visiting Thailand must possess valid passports or accepted travel documents and appropriate visas before entering the country. Visitors from certain countries are permitted to stay up to 15 days without visas, provided they possess tickets confirming departure within 15 days, while visitors from several other countries are allowed to apply for tourists visas at all ports of entry. Transit visas are granted for up to 30 days and tourist visas for up to 60 days. Non-immigrants, diplomatic and official visas are valid for up to 90 days. The Law in Thailand When traveling in Thailand you need to be respectful of 3 very important rules to remember. 1. Never speak bad about the Thai royal family, especially the king. Do not vandalize Royal family images, like posters or book pages. Even writing something insulting about the Thai royals can be dangerous. An Australian man was jailed for three years for writing three sentences in a book that were considered insulting to the King. 2. Never swear at Thai people/ Goverment offcials/ Police/ Airport Customs officers. Swearing at an immigration offcial at the airport will get you prison time. 3. Don't get caught using drugs in Thailand Thailand has very strict drug laws. If you get caught smoking a joint it will cost you around 1,000 USD just to stay out of jail.
