FORMULATING A

HYPOTHESIS
Quarter 1 Week 6
ADVANCE ENGLISH
What is A HYPOTHESIS IN Research?

Lavrakas (2008) stated that A

research hypothesis is a specific, clear,
and testable proposition or predictive
statement about the possible outcome of
a scientific research study based on a
particular property of a population, such
as presumed differences between groups
on a particular variable or relationships
between variables.
Forms of hypothesis
Null Hypothesis (Ho) – Is always in the
negative form as it is scientific and
skeptical in nature.

Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) – Is the

exact opposite of Ho as it is used to
accept the hypothesis.
Null Hypothesis
Null Hypothesis (Ho)

Examples:

There is no significant difference

There is no significant relationship
There is no difference
There is no relationship
Alternative Hypothesis
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha)

Examples:

There is a significant difference

There is a significant relationship
There is a difference
There is a relationship
How are hypothesis tested?
In a Quantitative Research, the
hypothesis is tested via statistics and is
based on the research method and
research design. The method of testing
the hypothesis directly influences the
form of the hypothesis.
Quantitative Research
Experimental research and Quasi
Experimental Research
Experimental Researches and Quasi-
Experimental Researches making use of
T-Test or Z-Test as a form of testing
always makes use of the following
Hypothesis.

Ho – There is no significant difference

Ha – There is a significant difference
CAUSAL COMPARATIVE RESEARCH

Causal Comparative researches making use

of T-Test or Z-Test as a form of testing
always makes use of the following
Hypothesis.

Ho – There is no significant difference

Ha – There is a significant difference
Correlative or correlational RESEARCH

Correlational researches making use of

Pearson R or Chi Square as a form of testing
always makes use of the following
Hypothesis.

Ho – There is no significant (positive,

negative) relationship
Ha – There is a significant (positive,
negative) relationship
Qualitative Research
Qualitative RESEARCH
Unlike in Quantitative Research, The
Hypothesis in a Qualitative is not “tested”
instead it is formulated or in other words
it “emerges” from the research data and
findings.
