OCEAN THERMAL

ENERGY CONVERSION
- Georges Claude
(Cuba, 1920)
- Generates
electricity from heat
energy in ocean
- Produces energy
from temp
difference (36F/20c
diff)
- Clean and
sustainable all year
round

a) sea-based
b) land-based
PROS CONS
• 1. produces clean, renewable • 1. only suitable in tropical
energy areas
• 2. no chemical pollution • 2. electricity produced is
• 3. no burning fossil fuels, less costly
greenhouse gas production
• 3. construction of plants big
• 4. can provide portable water investment
from ocean water
• 5. can produce fuels like • 4. construction may damage
hydrogen used to power fuel coral reefs and other marine
cells in electric cars ecosystems
• 6. can be used for aquaculture, • 5. may result to political
refrigeration, aircon concerns
ENVIRONMENTAL
AWARENESS
1. Air Pollution
- factories, vehicles, oil leaks, burning fossil fuels

2. Water Pollution
- discharge from agricultural and industrial activities

3. Soil and Land Pollution

- mining, deforestation, construction, industrial activities

4. Climate Change
- melting polar ice, season changes, increasing temperature
5. Global Warming
- greenhouse gases

6. Deforestation
- increasing human population calls for more space and natural
resources

7. Increased Carbon Footprint

- increase in greenhouse gas production due to fossil fuel usage

8. Genetic Modification
- modifying the genes of plants for food demand can cause harm
to animal consumers
9. Effect on Marine Life
- increasing amount of carbon in water

10. Public Health Issues

- current problems can affect the lifespan of humans and animals

11. Overpopulation
- not enough resources for the increase in demand

12. Loss of Biodiversity

- destruction of natural habitats
13. Littering and Landfills
- improper waste disposal

14. Ozone Layer Depletion

- presence of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) in atmosphere break ozone bond in
stratosphere, biggest whole in Antarctic

15. Mining
- causes the spread of harmful chemicals in atmosphere, pollute air, water, and
soil

16. Natural Resource Depletion

- overconsumption of non renewable resources lead to global warming
17. Natural Disasters
- hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, forest fires

18. Nuclear Issues

- radioactive waste

19. Habitat Loss

- destruction, fragmentation, degradation

20. Acid Rain

- contamination of precipitation with nitrogen and sulfuric acids
21. Agricultural Pollution
- pesticides and fertilizers have chemicals that contaminate
groundwater

22. Light and Noise Pollution

- high density of artificial light

23. Urban Sprawl

- population growth in undeveloped areas

24. Medical Waste

- biologically hazardous waste
WAYS YOU CAN HELP.
Ease the Load of Data Servers
• Clear junk/spam mail in your inbox as doing so will ease
the load on data servers, which are run by thousands of
computers emitting heat and greenhouse gasses
harmful to the environment. The same effects can be
achieved by watching YouTube videos on a lower quality
(something you can do when listening to YouTube
music/podcasts) or keeping your mic/camera off when
you're not speaking in online calls.
Ecosia: Search the Web, Plant Trees
• Ecosia is a search engine that uses its revenue from
search ads to plant trees in areas of need. Their servers
are fully operated by solar power. They have an
extensive explanation of how this works, financial
reports, and active projects on their website. You can
download it as a plugin on your browser or download
the app on android and ios devices. Ecosia also tallies
how many searches you've made. It takes
approximately 45 searches to plant a tree.
1652 / 45 =
36.7111111 trees
Pandemic Waste / Disposables
• If you're using disposable masks and gloves please cut the straps
and the mask itself in halves or fourths because if it ends up in the
ocean, ocean life can easily get tangled or choked by it.

• If you're not regularly exposed to a medical facility or employee

then consider using reusable masks, and if you go outside often
get atleast two so you can alternate using one after another.

• If you need to dispose of plastic bags that you can't use anymore
fold them into triangles because if it ends up somewhere it's not
supposed to be animals can easily get tangled or choked by it.
Laptop Power Usage
• Monitor your laptop charging cycle and don't leave it plugged in
because you're using unnecessary amounts of voltage that can
also bloat your battery.

• If you're using a lenovo laptop look for Vantage and go to device

> power > battery settings and turn on "Conservation Mode".
This caps your battery power so it doesn't fully charge. That way
you can leave it plugged in.
