CaCl2 Brine Table
Percent by weight
Water Phase Salinity (WPS)
• Chlorides in whole mud
= 1.15 cc x 10000 = 11500 mg/l
• Water % from retort = 20
• Chlorides in water phase
= 11500 / 0.2 = 57500 mg/l Chlorides
• 57500 x 1.565 = 90000 mg/l CaCl2

• From the salt table:

To convert kg/m³ to lb/bbl, divide by 2.85
OWR
Volume of Oil and Water
• Example:
• 2000 bbls of mud
• 20 % solids
• OWR 75 /25
• Volume of Oil and Water ?
• (2000 bbls x 20%)/100 = 400 bbls solids
• 2000 bbls – 400 bbls = 1600 bbls liquid
• (1600 bbls x 75% oil)/100 = 1200 bbls oil,
(400 bbls water)
Increase OWR – from previous page
• Increase OWR from 75/25 to 80/20 ?
• 400 bbls solids
• 1200 bbls oil
• 400 bbls water

• 400 / 0.2 = 2000 bbls final liquid volume

Of which water is 400 bbls
Oil is 2000 – 400 = 1600 bbls
Total volume = 2400 bbls
Increase OWR - continue
• Example:
• 3000 bbls of mud
• 23 % solids
• OWR 72 /28
• Volume of Oil and Water ?
• (3000 bbls x 23 %)/100 = 690 bbls solids
• 3000 bbls – 690 bbls = 2310 bbls liquid
• (2310 bbls x 72% oil)/100 = 1663 bbls oil,
(647 bbls water)
Increase OWR
• Example:
– Initial volume of oil (retort): 51%
– Initial volume of water (retort): 9%
– Original O/W ratio: 85/15
– Desired O/W ratio: 90/10
Decrease OWR – from previous
• Decrease OWR from 72/28 to 70/30 ?
• 690 bbls solids
• 1663 bbls oil
• 647 bbls water

• 1663 / 0.7 = 2375 bbls final liquid volume

Of which oil is 1663 bbls
Water is 2375 - 1663 = 712 bbls
Total volume = 3065 bbls
OWR – Constant volume
• Example:
– Total volume = 500 bbls
– Initial OWR = 80/20
– Required OWR = 85/15
– Solids content = 80 bbls
• 420 bbls liquid x 0.8 = 336 bbls oil
• (336 x 85) / 80 = 357 bbls oil
• There must be 420 – 357 = 63 bbls water
Increase OWR
• Example:
– Initial volume of oil (retort): 53%
– Initial volume of water (retort): 12%
– Original O/W ratio: 81.5/18.5
– Desired O/W ratio: 90/10

Oil to add (bbl/bbl mud) = H2O – (% oil + % H2O)
Wr 100
Decrease OWR – from previous
• Decrease OWR from 80/20 to 75/25 ?
• 500 bbls solids
• 1200 bbls oil
• 300 bbls water

• 1200 / 0.75 = 1600 bbls final liquid volume

Of which oil is 1200 bbls
Water is 1600 - 1200 = 400 bbls
Total volume = 2100 bbls
