THE SOCIAL
PSYCHOLOGIC
AL PERIOD

Period in Canada, from 1959

through 1990, in which
Gardner developed the socio-
educational model that would
be a fundamental base
for his motivation theory since
almost all his arguments would
revolve around this approach.
◦MOTIVATION ACCORDING TO GARDNER IS THE COMBINATION OF EFFORT,
DESIRE OF ACHIEVEMENT, AND POSITIVE ATTITUDES TOWARDS LEARNING A
NEW LANGUAGE.
GARDNER´S
MOTIVATION
THEORY

◦It posits that a critical

element of motivation is the
social motive and
certain attitudes
towards the L2 community.
◦Integrative motivation
stands for the desire
developed in the individual
of becoming part of a
community that leads him to
learn a second language.
◦According to this theory language achievement is mainly driven by what he
called  "integrative motivation".
Instumentality, on the other hand, stands for the consideration of the new
language aquicition as a tool  and it is also a link between activities and goals.
THE CRITICISM
If we correctly apply criticism and constructive
motivation, children will not only feel empowered to
develop as people, but they will also feel useful, and
they will learn to be responsible in an emotionally
healthy way, since they will not be afraid of making
mistakes and no they will be frustrated by other
people's comments, quite the contrary, they will get
the positive part of them. Criticism and proper
motivation create healthy self-esteem.
THE ATTITUDE/MOTIVATION
TEST BATTERY (AMTB)

A big questionnaire that contains more

than 130 items. It is based on Gardner’s
integrative theory of motivation, but it also
contains aspects related with L2 language
anxiety, the influence of parents and the
instrumental orientation, being a great way
to measure motivation with accuracy.
THE COGNITIVE SITUATED
PERIOD (1990)
Gardner focuses his efforts in the way
intrinsic and extrinsic factors help people
to project their motivation with specific
rewards, the same can be accompanied
by solid causes to ensure its repetition or
by causality, in other words the
motivation rises from a present
situation.
THE COGNITIVE- SITUATED
PERIOD
SELF-DETERMINATION
THEORY
links human capacity and
motivation, it is also the
process of making one's own
decisions and controlling one's
life.
SELF
DETERMINAT
ION THEORY
People are motivated to grow and
change by innate psychological needs.

According to self-determination theory,

people need to feel the following in order
to achieve psychological growth:
 Autonomy
 Competence
 Connection or relatedness
MOTIVATION

INTRINSIC MOTIVATION:  EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION:

Doing of an activity for its Involves completing a task or

inherent satisfaction rather exhibiting a behavior because
than for obligation . of outside causes

EXAMPLE:  EXAMPLE:
Playing sports because you As avoiding punishment or
enjoy how they make you feel. receiving a reward
ATTRIBUTION THEORY

People observe others to analyze

their behavior, in other words,
the attributions we make have
an important influence on our
feelings and also on the way we
think and relate to other people.
ATTRIBUTION THEORY
TASK MOTIVATION

It is one more capacity of the

individual's personality, it is
educable and can be
developed
THE PROCESS
ORIENTED
PERIOD (2001)
The individual has a certain
motivation that can change in the
time through the living of certain
experiences or process that
create its unique reality, so
motivation adapts to the proper
space of an individual. This period
is represented by the authors
Dornyei and Ushioda.
THE DÖRNYEI AND OTTÓ
MODEL OF L2 MOTIVATION
THE SOCIO DYNAMIC
PERIOD
Is a current motivation phase where
the human being reaches its
motivation by the influence of L2 or
second language, besides the
internal, social and contextual factors
convey in one place to extend the use
of a second language as a tool for
personal growth. The main authors of
this period are Dornyei and Ushioda.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
ORIENTATION AND MOTIVATION

Guidance promotes the self-knowledge necessary to

produce changes and resolve conflicts in terms of
developing new alternatives and incorporating internal
resources that strengthen personal development,
helping the student to choose the best decision in the
face of a problem. While motivation is the student's
interest in his own learning or in the activities that
lead to it. Interest can be acquired, maintained or
increased based on intrinsic and extrinsic elements.
