Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
• Is a planned system of working to avoid injury and illness in a working environment
by recognizing hazards and risks. PREVENTIONS IS BETTER THAN CURE!

Steps in Managing Health and Safety at Work

 Hazard Identification (Spotting the Hazard)
• Anything that can hurt someone is a Hazard. When working, always be alert to
anything that may be dangerous.
• Examples:
• Frayed Electrical Cords could result in electrical shock.

• Boxes that are stacked could fall on someone.

 Risk Assessment
• Is done to evaluate how a hazard could harm someone and how serious the harm would be.
Assess the risk by asking questions such as, “How could the hazard badly hurt someone?”.

• Once you spot a hazard and after assessing the harm it may inflict someone, you need to
report it to higher authority, particularly if these are difficult to fix and would cause serious
harm to workers.

 Make Changes (Risk Control)

• It is the responsibility of the employer to fix hazards in the workplace. But workers may fix
simple hazards like picking up things from the floor and putting these away to avoid a trip
hazard.
