Introducrtion:
Metropol Parasol is a wooden structure located at La
Encarnación square, in the old quarter of Seville, Spain. It was
designed by the German architect Jürgen Mayer and
completed in April 2011.
It has dimensions of 150 by 70 metres (490 by 230 ft) and an
approximate height of 26 metres (85 ft) and claims to be the
largest wooden structure in the world. The building is
popularly known as Las Setas de la
Encarnación (Incarnation's mushrooms).

• The structure consists of six parasols in the form of giant

mushrooms ("Las setas" in Spanish), whose design is
inspired by the vaults of the Cathedral of Seville and
the ficus trees in the nearby Plaza de Cristo de Burgos.
• Metropol Parasol is organized in four levels. The
underground level (Level 0) houses the Antiquarium,
where Roman and Moorish remains discovered on site
are displayed in a museum.
• Level 1 (street level) is the Central Market.
• The roof of Level 1 is the surface of the open-air public
plaza, shaded by the wooden parasols above and
designed for public events. The meaning of the name Metropol Parasol is-
A place in a metro city (mostly an umbrella) that
• Levels 2 and 3 are the two stages of the panoramic helps in protecting against sol ‘sun’
terraces (including a restaurant), offering one of the best
views of the city centre.
The Metropol Parasol filled in a huge urban void, by enriching the city with life. It soon became
Seville's own central square – Something that brought a contemporary spirit to such a historical an
traditional space.

The sinuous structure is proposed to be a landmark in the middle of the old city fabric, while
serving as an observation deck to discover the upper level of the compact urban context, a new
view of the city.

‘‘the form of this building was inspired by the vaults of Seville's expansive cathedral – I
wanted to create a "cathedral without walls" that would be "democratic" – and also by
the handsome trees already in the square.’' Jürgen Mayer H

Metropol Parasol – As an icon to the city of Seville:

• This structure built in 2011 was a remarkable structure

for the Plaza de la Encarnation, with dense fabric for
the inner city of Seville.
• Like the Bilbao Museum, in Bilbao, the structure
became an icon and international place – maker thus
creating a new and dynamic urban intervention.
• The structure even after being small in nature, stands
out due to its vast expanse and difference in scale as
compared to the surrounding buildings.
• It’s an iconic project not only because of its
monumental architecture but also because of the
interesting history that surrounds its wooden structure,
considered the biggest one in the world.
• . As one would expect, its architectural qualities are the
reason why before, during and after its construction the
complex inspired criticism against its presence in that
landscape of this region of Spain.

It differs from others of its kind in that it is not a closed institution, locked at night, but a thing that
can be used at all times.
It is in the middle of a city, not on some industrial fringe straining for regeneration. It forms spaces
under and around it, in conjunction with other buildings, rather than standing aloof and alone. It
catches and holds views from side streets, and from inside the new structure looking out, and gives
them intensity through the extraordinariness of the structure.
