16. FIGHTING FIRES

o Never put yourself in danger.


o Evacuate everyone from the area of the fire.
o Only use a fire extinguisher if trained to do so.
o If the fire cannot be controlled by using fire extinguishers call
Civil Defence (999).
o Use the correct type of extinguisher for the fire:

Type of Fire Extinguishers


Solid Water, CO2, Dry Powder or Foam
Liquid Foam or Dry Powder.
Never water Explosion
Gas Dry Powder, Foam or CO2.
Risk of explosion.
Electrical CO2 or Dry Powder.
Never water Electrocution
o When using an extinguisher pull the pin, aim at the base of the fire
and sweep from side to side. Do not stand too close to the fire.
o Always ensure you have a safe route of escape when fighting fire.
