Only trained workers are authorized to operate mobile elevated working platforms (MEWPs) like scissor lifts and cherry pickers. The load limits must never be exceeded and fall protection like a harness with proper anchor points must always be worn. When moving a MEWP, the basket must be lowered and a banksman used to direct traffic.

o Only workers trained and authorized to do so may operate a MEWP.
o Never exceed the load stated on the safe working load plate. The loads may be defined as a weight (kg) or as a number of people. An average worker weighs approximately 80 kg. o Always wear a harness when using a scissor lift or cherry picker. Use the proper anchor points provided. Never get out of the basket at height. o Never remove the handrails around the working platform. o Always make sure the ground is flat and level before using a MEWP. If the MEWP has outriggers, use them. o Cordon off the area below the MEWP to prevent unauthorized access and reduce the risk from materials or tools being dropped from the basket. o When moving the MEWP around the work site make sure that the basket is returned to ground level before doing so. Use a banksman to keep other workers away. Check the path is clear and does not include crossing holes, steps or traps which may have been covered. o When the MEWP is not in use, always remove the ignition key or electrically disable the machine if battery powered.
