Pelvic inflammatory disease

 Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of a woman's reproductive organs. It is

a complication generally caused by some sexually transmitted diseases, such as
chlamydia and gonorrhea. Other infections that are not sexually transmitted can
also cause pelvic inflammatory disease.
CAUSES
 Most of the time, chlamydia and gonorrhea bacteria cause pelvic inflammatory
disease. These are sexually transmitted infections.Having unprotected sex with
someone who has a sexually transmitted disease can cause
 Bacteria normally found on the cervix can travel to the uterus and fallopian tubes
during a medical procedure such as:
 Birth
 Endometrial biopsy
 Spontaneous abortion
SYMPTOM

People can suffer:

 Pain areas: pelvis, abdomen, lower back, or vagina
 Circumstances in which pain occurs: during sexual intercourse or when urinating
 Whole body: chills, fatigue, or fever
 Groin: tenderness when moving the cervix, vaginal discharge, or vaginal odor
 Gastrointestinal: nausea or vomiting
 common: cramps or painful menstruation
HOW TO PREVENT IT
 Use condoms. When having sex, condoms are the best alternative to prevent a
sexually transmitted disease. It is not necessary for a man to ejaculate to spread or
contract a sexually transmitted disease; for that reason, make sure the condom is
put on before the penis touches the vagina, mouth, or anus. Other contraceptive
methods, such as birth control pills, injections, implants, or diaphragms, do not act
as protection
 Get tested. Make sure both you and your partner are tested for any sexually
transmitted disease. Share test results before having sex.
 Limit the number of sexual partners. The risk of getting an STI increases in
proportion to the number of sexual partners you have
DIAGNOSIS
 A pelvic exam. During the exam, the doctor will check the pelvic region for
tenderness and swelling. You can also use cotton swabs to collect fluid samples
from the vagina and cervix. The samples will be tested in a laboratory for signs of
infection and organisms such as gonorrhea and chlamydia.

 Blood and urine tests. These tests can be used to detect pregnancy, VIH, or other
sexually transmitted infections, or to measure white blood cell counts or other
markers of infection or inflammation.
