Adding and Subtracting

By: Ms. Kortney Pelkey

Adding and Subtracting

• Students will be able to…….

• Break down numbers using their
fingers, objects, or number lines.
• Calculate adding and/or subtracting
numbers while using their fingers,
objects, or number lines.
• Compare and explain the answers
they came up with.
Adding and Subtracting

• When adding and subtracting,

you can use…
• Fingers
• Objects
• Number Lines
• To solve the answer.
Adding and Subtracting

• When counting your fingers:

• Find the first number, in this case,
the top left picture, which is a 2.
• Then, add 1 finger.
• After that, count the total amount
of your fingers that are up.
• So, 2 + 1 = 3
Adding and Subtracting

• When counting with objects:

• Make sure you count each object, in this
case, fruits, inside the box.
• Then count how many objects are the
same, such as, how many bananas are
there?
• After counting all the fruits, add up the
total number of fruits inside the box.
• So, 5 apples + 3 lemons + 5 oranges + 5
bananas = 18 fruits.
Adding and Subtracting

• When using a number line:

• Find the first number, in this
case, 3 on the number line.
• Then add 4 places to the right
side of the 3 counting up.
• After adding, you should end on
the number 7.
• Therefore, 3 + 4 = 7
Adding and Subtracting

• When subtracting objects:

• Start with total amount, in the
first case, 5 red circles.
• After that, take 3 of the red
circles away.
• Therefore, you will be left with 2
red circles.
• So, 5 – 3 = 2
Check for Understanding

• Write out your own math problem then solve it!

• Examples could be:
• 2+7
• 6-1
• 9-5
• 3+0
• If you have questions, raise your hands.
