in 1930 at the age of 17 hoping to
escape poverty in the Philippines.

▪ “America Is in the Heart” was

originally published in 1946, It
describes Bulosan’s childhood in the
Philippines, his voyage to America, and
years of hardship and despair as a
wandering laborer following the
harvest trail in California.
