RHOMBUS

WHAT IS RHOMBUS?
- A rhombus is a type of
quadrilateral. It is a special case of a
parallelogram, whose diagonals
intersect each other at 90 degrees. This
is the basic property of rhombus. The
shape of a rhombus is in a diamond
shape. Hence, it is also called a
diamond. Check lines of symmetry in
rhombus.
PROPERTIES
OF
RHOMBUS
● All sides of the rhombus are equal.
● The opposite sides of a rhombus are parallel.
● Opposite angles of a rhombus are equal.
● In a rhombus, diagonals bisect each other at right angles.
● Diagonals bisect the angles of a rhombus.
● The sum of two adjacent angles is equal to 180 degrees.
● The two diagonals of a rhombus form four right-angled triangles which
are congruent to each other.
● You will get a rectangle when you join the midpoint of the sides.
● You will get another rhombus when you join the midpoints of half the
diagonal.
● Around a rhombus, there can be no circumscribing circle.
PERIMETER

- The perimeter of a rhombus is the sum of all its

sides. Since all the four sides of a rhombus are
equal, the formula used to find the perimeter of a
rhombus is: Perimeter = a + a + a + a = 4a, where
'a' represents the side length of the rhombus.
EXAMPLE
● What is the perimeter of a rhombus whose diagonals are
16 cm and 30 cm?

● A rhombus has four equal sides.

The perimeter of a rhombus whose diagonals are 16 cm and

30 cm is 68 cm.

Let's find the side of the rhombus first and then the perimeter.

Let's draw a diagram of the rhombus with the diagonals 16

cm and 30 cm
A rhombus whose diagonals are 16 and 30
So AC = 30 cm and BD = 16 cm

Therefore, AO = 15 cm and BO = 8 cm

Now to find the perimeter, we need the length of AB.

Let's find AB using the pythagoras theorem in △AOB,

AB2 = AO2 + OB2

AB2 = 152 + 82
AB2 = 225 + 64
AB2 = 289
AB = √289
AB = 17 cm
Therefore, the length of one side of the rhombus is AB = 17 cm.

The Perimeter of the rhombus: P = 4 × length of the side

P = 4 × 17 cm
P = 68 cm
Thus, the perimeter of a rhombus whose diagonals are 16 and 30 is 68 cm .
Area of Rhombus
 •
The area of a rhombus is defined as the amount of space enclosed or
encompassed by a rhombus in a two-dimensional plane.

• It depicts the total number of unit squares that can fit into it and it is
measured in square units like (, , , etc.)

• Different formulas can be used to obtain the area of a rhombus

depending upon the parameters known to us. The different formulas
followed for the calculation of the area of rhombus are:
- Using base and height
- Using diagonals
- Using trigonometry
The formula for Area of Rhombus When Diagonals Are
Known:
- The area of a rhombus is equal to half the product of the
lengths of the diagonals. The formula to calculate the area
of a rhombus using diagonals is given as,

Area = (d1 × d2)/2 sq. units,

Where: d1 and d2 are the diagonals of the
rhombus

● Example: Example: A rhombus has diagonals of 6 m

and 8 m, what is its Area?
● Area = (6 m × 8 m)/2 = 24 m2
The formula for Area of Rhombus When Side and Angles
Are Known:
● We apply the concept of trigonometry while calculating the area when sides and
angles are known.
● Area of a rhombus using side and angle is given as,
Area of a Rhombus = side2 × sin(A) sq. units, where 'A' is an interior angle
Example: What is the area of a rhombus if the length of its side
is 4 yards and one of its angle A is 30º.

Solution: As we know, area of rhombus = s2 × sin(30º)

Area of rhombus = s2 × sin(30º) = 42 × 1/2
⇒ Area of rhombus = 16 × 1/2 = 8 sq yards
Area of a Rhombus Formula
• Method 1: Using Diagonals

• Method 2: Using Base and Height

• Method 3: Using Trigonometry

Area of Rhombus Using Diagonals: Method 1

Example 1: Calculate the area of a rhombus having diagonals equal

to 6 cm and 8 cm.

Solution:
Diagonal 1, d1 = 6 cm
Diagonal 2, d2 = 8 cm
Area of a rhombus, A = (d1 × d2) / 2
= (6 × 8) / 2
= 48 / 2
= 24 cm2
Hence, the area of the rhombus is 24 cm2.
Area of Rhombus Using Base and
Height: Method 2
Area of a Rhombus = base × height sq units

Example: Find the area of a rhombus having a side length of 9

inches and the height of the rhombus of 10 inches.

Solution: As we know, Area = base × height units2

⇒ Area = 7 × 10 inches2
⇒ Area = 90 inches2
Area of Rhombus Using Trigonometry:
Method 3
Example 3 Calculate area of a rhombus if the length of its side is 2
cm and one of its angle A is 30 degrees.

Solution:
Given,
Side = s = 2 cm
Angle A = 30 degrees
Square of side = 2 × 2 = 4
Area, A = s2 × sin (30)
A = 4 × 1/2
A = 2 cm2
