(Part 2)
Coverage:
• Graph of other variations of y = sin x and y = cos x
• Identifying the phase shift and vertical shift of the graph
Graphing Other Variations of
y = sin x and y = cos x
Graphing Variations of y = sin x and y = cos x
• The general form: y = A sin(Bx−C) + D and y = A cos(Bx−C)
+ D or y = A sin(B(x−C/B)) + D and y = A cos (B(x−C/B)) + D
• The value C/B for a sinusoidal function is called the phase
shift, or the horizontal displacement of the basic sine
or cosine function. If C > 0, the graph shifts to the right. If C
< 0,the graph shifts to the left. The greater the value of |C|,
the more the graph is shifted.

Graphing Variations of y = sin x and y = cos x
• While C relates to the
horizontal shift, D indicates
the vertical shift from the
midline in the general
formula for a sinusoidal
function. The function y =
cos(x) + D has its midline
at y = D.

• Any value of D other than zero shifts the graph up or down.

VARIATIONS OF SINE AND COSINE FUNCTIONS
Given an equation in the form
f(x) = A sin(Bx − C) + D or f(x) = A cos(Bx − C)+ D,

C/B is the phase shift and D is the vertical shift.

SAMPLE PROBLEM 1.
Graph the following. Identify the amplitude, the period, the
phase shift and the vertical shift of the following functions.
1. f(x) = sin(x + π/6) – 2
2. f(x) = 3 sin(π/4x – π/4)
3. f(x) = -2 cos(π/2x + π) + 3
4. f(x) = -2 cos(π/3x + π/6)
SURPRISE QUIZ
Graph the following functions. Don’t forget to indicate the
period, amplitude, phase shift and vertical shift of the given
functions.
1. y = 3 sin(x – 5π/6)
2. f(x) = 3 cos x
3. f(x) = 2 sin(-3x – π/2) + 2
4. y = cos (x/4 + π/4) – 2
5. f(x) = -2 sin(πx/2)
