Writing Equation of a Line
RECALL!
• The standard equation of a line is Ax + By = C.
• The general equation of a line is Ax + By + C = 0.
• The slope-intercept form, y = mx + b, can also be used to
write an equation of a line.
Writing Equation of a Line
Given Its Slope and Y-intercept
• If the given is a slope and y-intercept, just substitute the
values to the slope-intercept form
y = mx + b
Writing Equation of a Line
Given Its Slope and Y-intercept
Sample Problem.
Write the equation of a line given its slope and y-intercept.
1. The slope is 3 and the y-intercept is 7.
2. Slope ⅗ and passes through point (0,5)
3. The slope is ½ and passes through point (0,-6)
Writing Equation of a Line
Given Its Slope and a Point
• If the given is a slope and a point, we will use the formula
below.
y – y1 = m(x – x1)
where m is the slope and (x1, y1) is the given point
Writing Equation of a Line
Given Its Slope and a Point
Sample Problem.
Write the equation of a line given the following.
1. Slope is 2 and passes through (-1,3).
2. Slope is 5 and passes through (0,9).
3. Slope is -⅔ and passes through (-6,-5)
Writing Equation of a Line
Given Two Points
• RECALL: The slope of a line is given by the formula m = (y2–
y1)/(x2 – x1).
• To find the equation of a line, if the given are two points, we
will use this formula.
Writing Equation of a Line
Given Two Points
Sample Problem.
Write the equation of the line that passes through the
following points.
1. (-5,10) and (-3,4)
2. (-5,-26) and (-2,-8)
3. (3,1) and (-6,-2)
Try It!!!
Write the equation of the line given the following.
1. (-3,0) and slope -6
2. (-1,2) and (3,5)
3. slope ⅝ and passes through (0,-2)

Solving Word Problems
Sample Problem 1
The percent y (in decimal form) of a battery power remaining
x hours after you turn on a cellphone is y = -0.4x + 1.
1. Interpret the x- and y-intercept
2. After how many hours is the battery power at 80%.
Solving Word Problems
Sample Problem 2
Robert plans a diet to gain 0.1 kg a day. After 15 days, he
weighs 35 kg. The number of days that he is on a diet and his
weight are related.
1. Write an equation in slope-intercept form of this situation.
Solving Word Problems
Sample Problem 3
You are assigned to help sanitize the school. The amount y
(in gallons) of chlorine remaining in a chlorine tank after
disinfecting x hours is y = -4x + 16.
1. Determine the x- and y-intercept.
2. How many hours have passed if there are 3 gallons left?
